See, in Saga 1, in the final battle against The Emperor, the only reasonable choices to use were either Ban, Raven, or Bit as Ban and the Blade Liger AB were the highest in terms of stats and Bit and Raven were tied for 2nd though Raven was more favorable cause of his Geno Breaker. So the best teams were automatically fanboy teams.
In Zoids Saga Fuzors, you see a lot more customization. Some of the best teams I've seen put together are Skilled Shooting teams, using Naomi, Raven, Amy, Regina, Irvine, and Fan in order to deal easy critical hits. Critical hits IGNORE defense, making Death Saurer VR and Berserk Seismo a breeze.
Also, Affinities did exist, just not in the form of level bonuses. For example, putting Jack in a zoid that had feeble built in attacks such as a flying type other than Black Redler or Storm Sworder would be plain ridiculous. Also, Atrei was a character of whom you could build an affinity for towards ANY zoid because of the point level up system but balancing things out would have made him perfect for Trinity Liger, which was the ideal choice in this game ue to it's great natural stats and its high growth rate.
In Zoids Saga 1, whoever had Ban and Raven on their team and used nothing but CPCs was basically the winner......The only alternate strategy that existed to this was using special weapons that ignored defense for strategic battle such as the Hind Buster which always got critical hit, the Anti Air Ballistic Missile, and the Super Napalm Missile.
See, people would say "well, i dun caer if me teem sux, it still gets teh job dun agaunst the final boss"....
Try that in a VS battle and see how far you'd get. Those teams won't last a turn unless composed of nothing but highly armored up Ultrasaurus/UltimatePhalanx/MadThunder/Gilvader/KingGojulas/DiabloTiger/Cyclops.
In that case whoever iis using the uber zoid will only last 2 turns max due to lack of support.
There are only two XL class zoids worth using and they are Seismosaurus (Berserk Seismo and Ultimate Seismo too) and Deathsaurer/DeathMeteor/DeathsaurerVR. Gilvader and King Gojulas don't count as they're secret class.
