Not using tail weaponary isn't that bad of a thing. The only times you could use it is if someone is behind you. Having an enemy behind you is something I'd try to avoid personally...

I always figured the ligers could bend their tails in multiple directions, making their tail-guns very flexible weapons... I'm surprised nobody in the shows (AFAIK) used the tail weapons.

Tomy calls it as a 108mm Beam Cannon on he LZ's tail, I think. I suppose it could be a (Plasma Particle) Beam Cannon. *shrugs*
I generally use any and all weapons that I have at my disposal as is appropriate.

It can't be a Plasma Particle Gun. Harry Champ used a PPG and it was so big that it took up an entire Cannon Tortoise's back.

High-density beam gun, but potato, potahto. I had him use it once...but unless you're running away from something, it's not much use. Then again, when you're faster, having something tailing you might not be all that uncommon.

I agree with Cheetah, why couldn't the Liger bend his tail in any direction? The tail gun is actually a pretty versatile piece of weaponry. -Phenotype

But given how thin a Liger's tail is, it probably suffers from severe recoil. I don't think it's a very effective weapon.
Come to think of it, no one besides Brad and various Gun Sniper pilots have ever used a tail-mounted weapon.

I thought beam guns didn't have much in the way of recoil...
