well lets start with the controls *when I use natural it means it can't be removed Control Stick: moves A: natural CC (claws, teeth, kicks, ect.) B: natural ranged (CPC, Belly cannons, ect.) Y: Custom weapons (all those guns and stuff that you unlock) X+A: NCC EX move (only if you have the EX bar full) X+B: NRanged EX move. X+Y: Custom EX move. R: Jumps (mostly useless). L: forgot/nothing. Z: forgot/nothing.
this is more or less a "classical" fighting game engine (i.e their is no visible block button and you just need to beat the crap out of your oppenent). ZFMC is also unique b/c it has an armor system that is basically auto-block (you still take some damage but you only take a lot of it if your armor is gone).
Tips: -always run forward (unless you perfer a ranged zoid) to your oppenent to make sure you get the first hit. -use your EX attacks to break thier armor and/or use them when your opponent's armor breaks.

To use ranged attacks, you'll need to hold the attack button for a second or two to lock on to the opponent.
To use attack combos (for built-in weapons) or to use multiple custom weapons, you have to hit the attack button several times - for instance you have to mash A several times to get the elephander to do his stompy attack.
Some weapons, especially built in ones, have different fire modes. For instance, hitting B on deathsaurer shoots the CPC, but tapping away (or possibly towards) and then B shoots the nose machine gun.
Templar is right that jumping is almost always useless. Exception is with Iron Kongs and some of the cats, where charging a melee attack and then releasing it while in the air results in a very effective attack.
Blocking is passive - you automatically block if not moving the D-stick think.

few more tips: -make sure the difficulty is set to 1 (super easy/easy) if you are having trouble with the game (2=easy/normal 3=normal/hard and 4=hard/very hard). difficulty can be found in the options menu.
-Zi fighter mode is very useful when it comes to unlocking stuff (mainly pilots).
-if you're doing a versus or a zi fighter match make sure when you choose your pilot and co-pilots that you can get the most out of thier abilities (i.e. the bars that appear will help you if they have more in them, the ones that don't give you much charge up your EX bar faster).
-Gairyuki, Liger zero Pheonix, and Murasame liger SC as well as the anime customs are un-customizable but the fuzors (ryuki, Pheonix, SC) use thier fuzor partner for Y and X+Y attacks.
-if a zoid was good in the versus/battle legends game that doesn't nessacarily mean its good in FMC (I'm looking at you Blade liger)
side note: Seeing the elephander jump and attack (R+A) is fun to watch.
