At the moment I am borrowing the office Gamecube to play VS3 and Full Metal Crash (the office GC is an american version, with a switch to allow japanese mode), and the fonts display correctly.
Skye has confirmed that if I were to buy a Pal gamecube and use Freeloader to play the zoids games, the fonts would get mangled. Since there's nothing I want to play on GC in english, that would seem a bit of a shame!
Does anybody here use Freeloader/Action Replay on an american GC to play the Zoids games? Do you get mangled fonts?
I'm thinking I might need to buy a US GC and get it shipped over. Either that or wait for the Wii and hope that it's region-free as well as backwards compatible!

Freeloader on US Gamecube caused weird fonts on Zoids Versus II, too.

VS I also.
The Wii will be compatible with GC games, but I don't know about region-free or if it will even play GC games from different regions at all. I haven't heard that it won't, but I also haven't heard that it will, if that makes sense.
By the way, where do you work that you have a Cube at the office, let alone one with region switching? <_<

well im from portugal so i have a pal game cube when i use freeloader to run zoids games the fonts do get wierd with loads of @ and stuff like that i read that the pal cubes edont support japonese font thats why it gets all wierd because th texts were writing with a american and or pal keyboard witch are pretty different as we all know. the cube simply replaces the japonese symbules with romanic letters that are on th same place as the japonese symbole should be for exemple: you get an @ because the japonese symbole is located in that key but the cube cant read kanji, so it probebly reads as the @ but sonic adventure 2 had a japonese option for both text and voices and the cube used the font correctly,so i belive it was implented on the game thats why the cube could use it. its just a guess anyway

It looks like the font problem is only when using Freeloader - having the hardware switch doesn't cause any text weirdness on VS3 or FMC. It seems like the best thing to do is to keep fingers crossed (or thumbs held, if South African) that the Wii will fully embrace the region free concept.

How does one hold one's thumbs?

Make a fist with your thumbs on the inside.
My south african workmate who told me of this bizarre practice said that if you don't get the luck you were hoping for, at least you'll be prepared to do some punching. But only if you think breaking your own thumbs is a clever fighting technique.

edit:oh yeah im getting my FMC soon probebly tomorrow if im lucky ;D Quite possibly the best game you will ever buy! Let us know whether the text looks okay when playing it with Freeloader - because the game will almost certainly use Renderware font rendering rather than the system renderer built into the GC, I suspect that the fonts might turn out fine... Ow! Crossing fingers and holding thumbs are not compatible!

Well I had heard from some people that I know that the Wii might NOT be regon-free....which makes no sense to me because wouldn't having a regon free system bring in more money?
