First fanfic, go easy on me. Tell me what cha think. Ch1 soon.
Prologue: Hunter
Orion Talx rose back to his feet. The footprint was certainly fresh, and it was definitely canine. He had glimpsed it once or twice now, darting over or around the endless dunes. He would catch it.
"Come along boys, we've almost got 'im." Talx turned back to his zoid, a worn grey Gun Sniper. It was armed with dual electro-magnetic net launchers, one on each arm, and a lone massive cannon on its back. This zoid was obviously over-customized, if there was such a thing. Talx climbed up his Gun Sniper's leg quite nimbly, despite his short and stout stature. His two assistants, Taur and Faulk, stood beside him, each in a Shadow Fox. Taur and Faulk were brothers, hired mercenaries who Talx planned to use as herders. The foxes were worn and lightly armed, but very agile. Perfect for the job.
The three had been following this wild zoid for almost a week now, but it constantly found an escape. Two weeks ago, Talx had recieved intel that an unclassified wild canine zoid was spotted in the desert, and had been eluding any contact. He had also, recieved high-security information, requesting the wild zoid alive for breeding and manufacture, from BOTH the Empire and the Republic. If he was to capture the thing, it was hello to the life of a wealthy provider. Obviously, the core of an unseen zoid was invaluable. Unlucky for the Republic, the Empire usually paid better.
Talx cleared his throat and proceeded forward, trailing the two Foxes. "Let's hit that thing tonight boys!" He barked. "Papa needs a new wranglin' partner!" The brothers each laughed to themselves.
The three hunters followed tracks through the sand until sunset, when a barely-habitable town sparkled in the distance.
"There," Talx declared."It'll be there Hiding amongst the enemy. Quivering in some cranny, no doubt."
"What about the people, boss? Will it hurt anyone?" Faulk, the older brother spoke.
"I have no reason to think so. It will evade and remain in the shadows all night. It'll avoid any confrontation." Talx paused. "Hit the sack boys, I'll keep my gun on the ruins. Tomorrow will be payday!" With a half-cheer, the brothers leapt from their zoids, and began working on some canopies to sleep under, and soon a fire was going too.
Camp set up, Talx sat alert in his Gun Sniper's cockpit. He had the town super-magnified on his HUD, panning over rooftops. Much of the night passed this way, until Talx's head began to droop with fatigue.
A flicker of motion flashed on Talx's HUD, and adrenaline sparked him back into ready position. His thumbs on the controls, Talx braced the sniper, loaded the rifle, and swept for motion. There it was. A shining canine figure atop a building, sleek and menacing. It swooped over rooftops without pause, giving no opening for Talx, despite his precision of following the zoid's movement. Talx kept his cannon crosshairs pinned to the zoid, expertly sighted for a shot.
"Must you hurry?" Talx jested to himself, "Oh? Whats this?" The zoid was slowing, coming to a stop. It paused, head high, ears straining for any threat.
"Won't even hear the shot." Muttered Talx, as he pulled the trigger.

Notes:"Wild" zoids are the sleek, metallic life forms that roam planet Zi, not the war machines without pilots. When a zoid dies, it's core splits, like a cell, becoming up to four different individual cores, so long as the core was not damaged in the zoid's death. These cores would usually flourish in the ion-rich water, unless immediately grafted into technology and war machines. ( It is in my belief that the 'organoids" from the anime/manga were actually wild zoids). Despite the sacrilege of zoid-core hunting and manufacturing, there are hundreds of unseen life-forms that have yet to be crippled by the inevitable greed of man.
