MY GOD, its an update.. 2 days, not 2 months after the last one.
The next couple of weeks were pretty weird. I spent my time pretty much split between learning the ins and outs of the king liger, and helping Doc Leyon muck around with the gale’s computer systems. We ended up cutting open all of the core blox, extracting and examining the systems. The more we worked at it, the more excited and less intoxicated Leyon was. HE was certain that we were only days away from being able to replicate the ultimate X system when part of his past came calling on 12 grey steel feet.
I doubt there is a zoid fan on the planet who hasn’t heard of the tigers team. No other team has drifted all over the ranks the way the tigers have. Although they have never made S rank, in their career they’ve gone from the bottom of class c to the top of A rank, and back, like a freaky yellow tiger powered rollercoaster. It’s rumoured that their second comeback had a lot to do with doc Leyon, and its well known that their leader Kirkland has spent more money than the team can really afford trying to hunt him down. So with Leyon stopped with us I shouldn’t have been surprised by a bunch of yellow cats emerging from the desert, snarling in a challenge.
But I have to admit I was caught off guard.
2 large Yellow tigers flanking a smaller, but somehow just as deadly looking one.
“Halt, pawn of Leyon.” Crackled from the small, somewhat asymmetrical yet streamlined cat that I was beginning to realise was one of the infamously rare liders.
“What’s the problem?”
“You are sheltering the notorious criminal Dr Leyon. Stand aside and let us seek our revenge, or be destroyed. There is but one of you, and three of us.”
“Count again boys!”
Pearce. She’d been out for a run too, taking her storm sworder to near stratospheric heights. The woman loved to fly, that was for certain
“Actually, I think if you count again, you might be at a disadvantage”
It was the boss. Actually it was the boss and Sanders. Sanders was in the Jamaphander, A fearsome electronics warfare variant of Elephander with the ability to provide advanced targeting to it’s friends while making it’s foes lives hell. He hadn’t attached the minesweeper tho, the trunk still packed it’s fearsome claw/machinegun cluster. Stoller was of course in his Comanderphander, with its missile launcher ears, E shield/blade trunk weapon, and cp 15 MLRS/AGU system.
“Back Off boys, we don’t want to fight you.”
Even the bluster of the tigers team paled before the thought of that much firepower.
“Oh yeah?” Kirkland rallied back.
“We Challenge you lot to a battle then. Three on three. Fight us on the ground like men!”
My heart sank. Ok they were losers but this was the tigers team. Any one of them had fought more battles that I’d dreamed of fighting. But I knew what the boss was gonna say, and he said it.
“You’re on. Be back here in 24 hours with a Judge.”
When we got back into the whale king Stolelr took one look at my grey face and laughed.
“Don’t worry Dave. I’ve taken all three of them myself before. Even a klutz like you should be able to take Omari. Leave Kirkland and his novelty kitty to the professionals.”
We spent the next couple of hours thoroughly checking the elephanders over, and rearming the Jamaphander into an standard elephander trooper. Its not like the tigers were known for use of sophisticated electronic equipment, so a few more lazers and an e shield would have to come in handy. This was a wise choice.
“Battle mode 357.” The judgeman called out. “Under this battlemode the use of electronic warfare zooids is forbidden. All electronic warfare zoids must leave the battlefield immediately. Scanning, scanning. All zoids compliant with battlemode 357. Ready?”
There was s string of furious splutters from the tigers team as they realised that we’d conned them.
“Fight!”
Our plan for this battle was brutally simple. Elepahnders were slow turning bricky zoids, Heavily armoured and with e shields, but pretty much incapable of dodging. A king liger is a ultrahigh speed pointed cat zoid, with a weaker but omni directional e shield. Capable of insane levels of dodging, but with less than an eighth of the firepower of an elephander. I was going to try and draw Qmari off so that only one tiger could get behind the elephanders at once. One tiger versus the firepower of the comanderpahnder’s assault gating unit shouldn’t be able to do too much damage before getting blasted. Fingers crossed.
Of course our plan failed to acknowledge one important thing.
After the humiliation the tigers had suffered at the hands of the Blitz and Fugel teams recently, they had a mad on for pointed cats. I sprung off to the side in front of Omari’s face, trusting my shield to soak up their sporadic and poorly aimed fire, only to discover not one, but three yellow kitties pounding the dry badlands soil behind me. I thanked TOMY, Zoid eve, and what ever other gods might be listening that the designers of king liger had decided to make its shield omni directional as impact cannon shots were intercepted by glowing energy before they could make a mess of my pristine white rear. My needle gun spat fire at the sabers, but it was designed for a different age of Zoid manufacture, one in which the heavy frontal armour that is found on a saber fang was les of an issue. Finally some of the hits actually did something Omari’s impact cannon falling silent and one of lineback’s laser sabres snapped free. They shied off to either side, only to discover the other thing about elephanders.
Elephanders are slow to turn, and slow to accelerate. They do have an impressive top speed however and had almost caught up when the two saber fangs shied.
I believe that the edited version of the tape broadcast has Lineback shouting OW! When Stoler flicked his zaber almost effortlessly into the air. It certainly censored what happened after, the boss man cursing a blue streak as he saw the result that an incautiously thrown 60 odd tonnes of cat has when it collides with the back of another elephander. Sanders was knocked ass over trunk, an easy target for the belly raking claws and sabers of Omari.
I didn’t know any of this at the time. I was more worried with a bright yellow cat, it’s heavy frontal guns wearing away my shield, and it’s insane speed getting it get closer than I was comfortable with.
Time to try what Smythe had failed at. I whipped the tail hard to the side and dug in a foreclaw, charging my laser blades at the same time. I managed a much better turn than the one that had killed Smythe, Swinging my laserblades into line with the lider’s back mounted weaponry even as my shield generators finally overladed from the strain, allowing the mini kitty’s amazing array of forward mounted weaponry to rake me with a storm of fire.
I instinctively tightened the triggers on my mega vulcans, and tracer rounds flashed between us. in an eye blink we were past each other, tail mounted guns snapping off a last retort before we veered out of the line of fire. Only then did I have a second to look at the status board.
Not good.
The right side of the zoid had been shot up bad during the turn, and the shield generators on that side were out till they could be repaired. the liders tail canons had smashed the Doppler radar array mounted in my ears. Apart from the gold tinted windshield I was blind. At least my manoeuvrability wasn’t shot yet.
Fitfully the left side E shield generators sparked back to life, at a half of their strength. Enough to deflect one or two shots no more.
I wheeled the liger and saw something moderately pleasant however. Lider wreckage.
Seems I’d hit it just behind the head with the laser blades, sheering off the back mounted cannons, and that my snapshot with the needle gun had actually severed its tail.
Of course the little bastard still outgunned and outran me. hardly seemed fair. I’d have to get in close to finish him and there was no way an experienced warrior like Kirkland was going to let me have another samurai pass.
How experienced he was I found out in just a second. See he’d pegged me for an amateur. He figured I would stop to check the parts he had lost.
He was right.
Ambush.
A snarl of cannon fire quickly overloaded my shield and then pointy laser sabres did for me.
My king liger slumped over, down for the count. Command system freeze.
Of course my being knocked out didn’t save the tigers team from defeat. As Stoller had said, he had defeated em all one on one in the past. I hadn’t taken anyone out. But on the other hand I hadn’t made a complete ass of myself either. My zoid was trashed, but I was in one unmarked piece.
I'd faced some relay class A fighters, and hadn't wound up hurt.
Yeah. things were looking up.
