Shivering into consciousness, he awakes to find darkness surrounding him.
“Was it a dream?”
A single high intensity spot light beamed on shining in his eyes, blinding him.
“STAND UP! STAND UP I TELL YOU!”
Shielding his eyes he struggled to his feet.
“Who are you?” questioned JX.
The spot light went out. Then all the lights came on. He could see he was in some kind of cell about 10 meters long and 15 meters wide and about 10 feet tall. Suddenly the roof began to open sliding into the wall. Looking up he saw the wall continued upward for at least another 40 meters. Thirty meters above there was a small balcony with a man standing on it.
“Put this on.” ordered the shadowy figure on the balcony, throwing some thing over the edge.
The object fell to the floor with a solid thud. JX walked over to the package. Unfurling the fabric he saw a black leather uniform, a chunky steel belt, and rugged looking field boots. He put on the pants, and inserted his feet into the boots and strapped himself in. Picking up the top he flipped it over. The back was emblazoned with an emblem he had never seen before. It was white and red, similar to the emblem of the old empire, but the dragon thing wrapped round the sword was different. The dragon’s wings were a different shape and was no longer wrapped round a sword, but a bolt of lightning,
“That’s strange.” He thought and put on the jacket, as it was better than being half naked. Pulling up the heavy zip he felt the leather round his biceps tighten as his muscles tensed to heavy up the awkward zip, until as he fastened up the neck , “RIPPPPPPPpppp” the arm of the jacket had ripped had ripped down the length of his bicep.
“Uh, Must be that cheap crap they make the skin on a foot ball out of.” He muttered as he grabbed the sleeve, pulling it downwards sharply to separate it from the torso. As he did the same with the other side, he heard another thud be hind him. He turned round to find a pair of gauntlets clipped to a metal belt. He walked over, picked up the accessories and put them on. He looked up the man had returned to the edge of the balcony. The figure pointed a small metal object down at JX, a red light blinked on the object and small holes opened on three of the walls surrounding him.
The figure called down to him, “NOW THE TESTS BEGIN! Level one.”
Suddenly, the floor quickly moved, toppling JX and carried him to the wall where the holes had opened up with holes in the walls either side. Picking himself up the floor slowly started to move backwards, he started to walk forward keeping pace with the floor. The floor gradually began to gather speed, he did also, now in a moderate run the heard what sounded like pneumatic arms start to move all around him, focusing straight ahead, he noticed something appearing in his peripheral vision, he quickly glanced be hind him. Large blades started to emerge from the holes. The machinery in the walls stopped. The blades were now fully extended. It was ok though as the floor was going at a rate he could easily manage to keep up with and the blades were about 5 meters either of him and about 6 be hind him.
“Welcome to level two!” boomed the voice. The floor shifted into a higher gear. The walls on each side began to close in on him. The stopped when the point, were there was only 2 meters apart. Not much room for a guy who has shoulders a meter wide. The floor sped up suddenly. JX off balanced by the turn of speed deviated slightly to the right, his arm sparked against a blade as it caught the bare edge of his shin. Bewildered by the fact that he has metal skin that sparks when clipped by a blade like a bullet skimming off the armour of a zoid, but it was still painful like he had been scrapped by a frightened animal, he powered on increasing the distance between him self and the spikes behind him.
“Impressive, Now try level three.” The floor slowed slightly, and small lights on his boots started to flash. His feet started to slam against the floor. They were magnetised. Gritting his teeth he powered on, ripping his feet off the ground an them having them pulled back down. He could feel himself being reeled in by the blades behind him. The pain surged through his whole body as the lactic acid kicked in. Just as he felt like just giving up and allow him self to be impaled, the boots lightened as the magnetic field disintegrated, his feet lightened, and the pain started to subside. The let up was like ecstasy, the relief made his body tingle with a mixture of adrenalin and endorphins.
“You are remarkable; you have survived for longer than most of the super enhanced humans and the majority of the cyborgs we have trialled, now let us see how you handle level four.” A door opened in front of JX. It must be the exit, mustn’t it? He bolted for the door. Just as he was getting to the door, WOOSH! A metal ball flew past JX’s head. The shock made him ease back. The next one came at his head he dodged left, spiking him self again. A series of various sized balls cam flying at him at various levels and angles, the smaller ones he could take the hits, but the larger orbs he avoided like the plague, because a hit by one of them would be game over. Then they started adding other objects into the barrage, high and low hurdles, blades, saw discs and pot holes. Ducking, jumping, swerving, weaving and sliding in some cases. Each manoeuvre left JX more and more tired. He had been running for god knows how long. His lungs were aching every step became a struggle.
“Enough!” ordered the observer above. The floor ground to a stop, the blades retracted, the door closed. JX collapsed in an exhausted heap, sweat dripping from between every body plate, the glow in his eye now a mere sheen. The lights went out.
“Sleep well, for tomorrow we start the hard work.”
