Opening his eyes he turn his head to stare at the woman behind the glass, only she is not he one behind the glass- he is. She staggers backward as their eyes meet. Looking closer at the glass he knows why. His reflection betrays the truth. He is no longer a man. His eyes were not the familiar blue they were when he fell asleep, now they were glowing white vessels, as though a star had been placed in each socket.
“It’s done, cut him loose.” called the woman.
The mask covering his mouth floated off his face, as the pipes and cables connected to his body separated from his skin. The liquid started to drain from the chamber, and he stared to float down with the fluid level. As he started to emerge from the water his skin felt like it was on fire, as the air began to react with his skin, making it harden. By the time the fluid had vacated the chamber his skin was now a net work of metal-like plates. The chamber slowly opened. He stepped out from the dimly lit pod into an even dimmer lit lab. The woman walked over to him.
“How do you feel?”
“What, where am I, who are you people?” he said in a deep rasping voice.
“JX-463, congratulations, the procedure appears to have been a success.”
“Wha, 463, what are you talking about. My name is Lieutenant Jax McLearen. What procedure?”
“No you are a corpse; you were killed 6 days ago, now you are just a number. And you and many others like you are helping us take zoidian warfare into the next millennia ……”
“KILLED, WHAT DO YOU MEAN KILLED? If I’m dead then how the hell am I talking to you right now?”
“Your redler squadron was shot down, on your bombing run. Your crippled zoid dragged its carcass back to our front line where it ejected your body. You were D.O.A
Nothing could have been done. So as your body wasn’t too badly damaged it was donated to our department to aid in our experimentation.”
“So what have you done to me?”
“It’s complicated but, we used nano technology to invade you double helix and cut the bonds between them expediting the imperfections in the strand s and creating new ones…”
“Just explain it to me simply. I’m a soldier, not a scientist.”
“Basically we messed with your very DNA and combined it with the DNA of an organoid, and you are the result.”
“So am I a human or an organoid or…..”
Looking down at his hands, his eyes reflecting in his palms
“……Am I a mistake?”
“No you are exactly what we wanted, an expert pilot, and now with the ability to interact with your zoid in a way no other human can. But you are neither man nor organoid, but a combination of both, a Humoid.”
“A Humoid......So what’s going to happen to me now?”
“Well first we have to some tests to see exactly what you are now capable of. I’m not going to lie to you we are going to almost literally push your body to breaking point. You will want to die, and you have no option but to do the tests, as the pain we can make you suffer for your non-compliance, Will be tenfold what you till feel in the tests.”
The door burst open and 4 massive men came stomping in, wielding stun batons accompanied by holstered pulse pistols. They surrounded JX creating a wall of flesh, muscle and steroids.
“You will now be taken by these gentlemen to your quarters.” She said snidely, turning her back as she shook her long silky jet black hair, as if in an attempt to tempt his more primal instincts to comply with her demands.
“And what happens if I don’t want to?”
“Then THIS happens!” roared one of the gargantuan brutes and he rammed his fully charged stun baton deep into the small of JX’s spine, right in the gap between the metallic plates. Electricity coursed through his body, dropping JX to the floor. Composing himself he hauls himself to his knees. HE lifts his head just to see a massive steel to capped boot surging towards his head; he brought his hands up to block the boot. But the force of the kick carried his hands into his face, throwing him onto his back, his head slammed against the floor.
“Night, night tough Guy.” said the hulk placing the end of the baton to JX’s forehead. The glow in his eyes faded to black and his lids closed as the pulse surged into his skull.
