Perhaps they are meant to be like that - like the lolcats 'phenomenon'. Low tech, shonky spelling etc.
Doesn't mean I would use them as my windows background, but I'd allow for the possibility that, in the context intended, they are not really bad.

Everything else aside... they're not even wallpaper size.

Hey, I've made stuff in Paint.
Try GIMP if you want something free but more robust. It's...very different to other programs, but can be fun when you get used to it.

For things that are rectangular, or for resizing photos, Paint is my tool of choice. It launches immediately, which makes it far less annoying than Fireworks or Photoshop.
For pixel art and corrections, I find Paint far more friendly than the real art programs, with all their high-faluting semi-transparencies and suchlike. In my day we feathered our edges by hand, with a feather.

Yeah, these are just a tad bit small. Make'em huge (1920x1200 is a good start) and then let the OS resize when set as a wallpaper.
BTW: Irfanview is the bomb for viewing and resizing. It has a different feature set than gimp or paint. Even does batch resize/conversion (comes in handy for digital camera pix etc).
