Hey all. I've been wanting to paint a Dark Spiner some nicer colors for a long time now. Especially since I had seen one with a very nice blue/orange color scheme like... 9 years ago. I tried to paint the first DS I had when I was 13 and that ended horribly. It died a horrible paint-flaky death and was trashed. Now that I'm older and wiser I want to do it right this time. I did a very quick Photoshop mock up of what I want to do, but I have no real idea where to start. I've read that I can get away without using primers, and I don't have an airbrush so I'd be using spray cans/paintbrush. I've been wandering around the forums looking for good tips on painting so I have kind of an idea as to how to go about it. I guess I'm just nervous about trying to paint a Zoid again and wondering what's the best way to go about it. I've spotted a fairly cheap DS on eBay to try painting on. The only metalics I'd want to use is a nice silver for the purple armor pieces and some details. Everything else will be flat. Attachments:

You could use Apple Barrel acrylic paints with a paintbrush or spray cans. Just mask it properly and spray with enough distance to avoid running. Testors makes some good sprays, I know people use Tamiya too. Good luck with your custom!

Alright, thanks for the recommendations. I looked up some Tamiya spray paints and I found some colors I like so I'm going to give those a shot. Now I just have to wait for everything in the mail!

For me the ideal has always been airbrush if you have access to one, but spray paints work well, too. The problem in my neck of the woods (Washington State) is waiting for the ideal conditions to paint; not too cold (most common), not too humid, not too windy... rarely, not too hot.

Unfortunately I don't have an airbrush. Luckily I have a basement with a walk-out door with a screen, so the weather isn't too much of an issue, unless it's too windy. But I have a big fan so I can just turn that on to suck out all the fumes out the door.

Much better rendition of DS! Can't wait to see it completed. The paint looks really solid.
