Hello, Kinggojulas24 here with another Zoids review. Today, I will be reviewing the somewhat elusive (and arguably hideous) Weida Zoids2 Bootlegs. I am not very knowledgeable of these bootlegs, but I do think there were only four produced, maybe more. I do know that there never were any of the larger motorized Zoids2 produced by Weida.
The Weida Zoids2 are notorious for their poor quality and hideous color schemes. I can vouch for these, except for Tarantulon and Aquadon, whose colors aren't too bad. An interesting thing to note is that all of them have silver chromed pilots. The caps also range from extremely soft to hard as rocks. In this review, I am going to take a brief look at each of the four Weida Zoids.
First, we have Tarantulon, the Spider-type Zoid. This one has the least amount of problems out of the line. The motor works decently, but is a bit slow compared with official releases of Spiderzoid. Its almost a perfect reproduction of the Tomy Zoids2 release, only it has a yellow frame instead of a black one. The chroming job on this one is very poor, and there are spots where its either too thick or none at all, showing the black plastic underneath. Also, it came with an extra lower cockpit half. Interesting....
Slither is my least favorite of the Weidas. The color is atrocious and one of the external gears on the motor has broken, and therefore doesn't work. The stickers are also of very poor quality, and most of them tore when trying to remove them from the sheet. The chrome work is pretty good, but it isn't chromed in some of the deeper grooves, but I think that makes it look a bit nicer. The pilot also isn't chromed well, looking more as if he was made of lead rather than chromed like normal Zoids2. On an odd-note, this one came with a Helic white head rather than a clamshell head.
Hellrunner is one of the better ones, and is arguably the most interesting. I've seen a Weida Hellrunner with yellow legs instead of black ones. (Personally, I think the black ones look better) While the green looks out of place with the chrome and black, it does make sense, with Hellrunner being a dinosaur. This one has a tight-fitting parts issue; the parts are too tightly fitting to allow the motor to run properly. Also, the missile pod was omitted from the sprue. The back gun is also very tight as you can see from the stress marks.
Aquazoid is the last but not least of the Weida bootlegs. I'm acually not bothered by this one's colors as much; it looks like a green frog with yellow spots. The motor works okay, but only on flat surfaces with good traction. However, the guns fit very tightly, and it required significant force to put them on. Also, the sticker quality is the same as Slither's; not very good. Interestingly, it came with a clamsell cockpit instead of a Helic whitehead cockpit. I swapped it out with Slither's cockpit to make it more accurate.
And those are the Weida bootlegs, an interesting oddity in the Zoids world. With all their issues I only recommend them if you're a serious Zoider or like clashing color schemes. If you do find them, don't pay too much for them. (I got them for very cheap, so I don't entirely regret getting them
Cruncher gives his opinion on the Weida bootlegs. Apparently, he does not think highly of them. Poor Slither.....
Thanks for reading, and I'll see you all at the next Zoids review!
