Before I get into this, I'd like to give a disclaimer of sorts: Prior to posting this, I looked through the rules to make sure it's okay, and then scoured the forums for a duplicate topic, and having not found one, posted this. If this is in the wrong place, or a duplicate, then please don't beat me, I've done my best. >_>
With the influx of Rebirth kits floating around, I've noticed a slight drop in price for many vintage zoids (i.e. Zeekdober, King Liger, etc.) that have been re-released - a slight decrease, but significant nonetheless. My question to the denizens of this forum is whether it would be a good idea to shell out the cash to buy one of these while they're at this price, even though it would be much more thrifty to just buy a re-release. In addition to this, I would like your opinion on whether it would be a sound investment, either for resale (always an option, grim though it may be) or over-all value (as in a collection).
Hopefully this question isn't too much of a drag, and I thank you in advance.

That depends on your personal look at zoids. Is this something you look at as an investment type of collection or are you just collecting to have the zoids you like? Some people actually look at toys as a type of investment....I just can't see it. To me, once I have detail painted it, built it, and run the motor, it is mine and no one else will see the value like me. I would not personnally want another mans built and painted zoid unless I plan to go over the edges myself and get them smooth or strip off all paint and start from scratch. In other words, I fail to see the point in a vintage kit that would be identical to a fresh new one. There would have to be significant changes to pay extra for pretty much the same kit. But that is strictly my take, to each their own.

The Rebirth gradeups have the cool motor bits prebuilt, and Zeekdober has some rather annoying mold changes to the guns (I showed both here). It's still cheap enough to get the rerelease I'm not that fussed. From what I've seen Kingliger's about the same other than one peg on the head, and Gul Tiger actually has the bonus of the gradeup unit. I don't really look at Zoids from an investment angle, so I'm not the one to ask about that half. The older kits are likely to be worth more simply for the first/original release factor, but as you said will cost you more.

Rebirth gives average fans the chance to get their hands on items that would otherwise be too pricey or rare.
Hardcore collectors can find solace in the fact that the rereleases are not equivocal in value to their hard-earned vintage treasures (in terms of scarcity, age, and in some cases, quality). It's really a win-win situation.

Thanks for the advice guys. I've decided to go with something less risky (but just as worth it, if not more, in foresight) than what I was originally planning on. I guess I'm just not hardcore enough to spend so much on something just so I can say that I own something rare. >_>
I have to admit that I wasn't really looking at things from the right perspective - your comments have helped me make the right choice. =D
Thanks again for your opinions.

I can only say don't treat toys as an investment - there is no sure value to it, and it depends on how many people want it.
Buy what you like with budget control, and enjoy the building process. That's all to it!
