Is there a zoid game that lets you actually control a zoid? As in in battles you get to move it around, fight it, etc. All the games I've looked into aren't, you are on a grid with turn-based fighting, nothing real time.

...what have you been looking at? Apart from the Saga series, almost the entirety of the games are all based around playing as the Zoids.
But unless you've got some way to play imported games, Battle Legends for the Gamecube (Also playable on Wii) is going to be the only one you'll be able to play.

The ones I did look at were all imports and I don't have the money to buy a different system or really smart enough to figure out how to get my system to play imports plus, the lack of being able to read Japanese is also a down fall. However, since I have a wii, I will look into Battle Legends.

It's available on eBay rather readily, it's just a matter of finding a copy within your budget.

Another option for the future is to buy a Freeloader and get Zoids Full Metal Crash (which is a fighting game somewhat in the style of Tekken) and/or Zoids VS III (the japanese-only sequel to Zoids Battle Legends.
