One of the things I miss most in the current Zoids line is small windups. When you look back, barring recolours/reissues, we haven’t had a new small windup since Snipe Master back in 2001 – and even then he was more of a continuation of a series of designs dating from a few years earlier. It’s a same, because the small windups are rather underrated. There are a lot of outrageously cool designs in amongst them, and a lot that should have been re-released. Like this little guy…
I managed to snag a Twinhorn by pure dumb luck. He was a part of a lot which had a BiN, so I went “TWINHORN! OMGWTF1” and bought it just like that. I felt that I was actually getting a fair price for the Twinny, who is one of the rarer and more pricey Zoids of the OJR for some reason. That I got four Zoids for that price was just a bonus.
So how did Twinhorn measure up? Well, lets take a look…
Mini-Good:
I will say this much now. Twinhorn is insanely cute. Really. Pics make him look big but, in reality, he’s not too much bigger then a Helcat. The fact that he’s meant to be a helluva big animal only helps this. He’s a pint sized little machine, but his design is very effective. He’s rather detailed, with plenty of panels, vents, tubes and the other sorta stuff you expect from old-style Zoidiness. He’s not cluttered but at the same time, not sparse on detail either.
Twinhorn’s colours are from the “Middle Zenebas” set and, as such, stand out a bit. He’s primarily a bright red that is a lot brighter then the usual “Zoid Red” that was used so much on OJR and OER Zoids. His legs and other parts are brlack – not quite brown and not quite black. This is offset by funky teal caps. It’s a very nice and very effective colour scheme that was shared with a number of other Zenebas Zoids, like Storch, Black Rhimos and Deathsaurer.
Twinny’s motion isn’t too involved (as one would expect from a Zoid his size) but it’s still good. He stomps forwards, raising and lowering his head as he goes. He actually gets a fair degree of movement out of it, more then just a little bob. His ears, trunk and back guns can be manually posed.
Speaking of which, Twinny is packing serious heat for a Zoid of his size. He’s got two guns on his back, two Heat Crasher Tusks, a six-shot vertical-launch missile system and, best of all, the greatest Zoids weapon ever: The Flamethrower Trunk!
If you have a Twinny who has stickers, then he has a unique variant logo; a yellow Zenebas logo. You won’t find it anywhere else, AFIK.
What else does this little guy have going for him? Oh yeah, he’s the Emperor’s Bodyguard. Now that’s cool.
Mini-Bad:
Nothing at all. Twinhorn punzd j00 all.
Mini-Ugly:
The one thing that isn’t cute at all about Twinny is his price. Expect to pay lots for a loose complete one, and more for a MiB one. Yow!
- He is like me in miniature... I shall call him Mini-Me.
- WHO'S the Emporer's bodyguard?
So all up, I think that Twinny is incredibly awesome in every conceivable way, and should be re-issued. Yesterday.
