I pity the fool on anything less than broadband who tries to download .bmp images. So please, for the sake of those people, use .gif or .jpg image formats for your custom pics!
Okay, in all sereousness, .bmp format images on the web is a really bad thing - the file size is too big for the image size. I know that JPEG or GIF compression, but if your smart about it (Jpeg on maxmum quality setting, for instance), the damage is minimal and it doesn't take nearly as long to load the images. Smaller file sizes also take less time for you to upload your files to your server.
On another note, how are some of you ending up with .bmp photos? Every consumer-level digital camera I've seen uses .jpg.

.bmp is just evil as far as the web is concerned. .png is good for lossless pics without smushing/lack of colors, but you don't really need that for Zoid pics.
When I'm saving pics as jpg using GIMP, I tweak the quality down a notch at a time...

Also people, please try to keep your images at a size of 480 x 360 pixels, large images are annoying. -Phenotype

The problem with .png stems from poor support for 'em from I.E. and Safari, and for some odd reason most people use I.E.

IE's a heck of a lot better than AOL. No parental controls for me anymore. Because as we all know, Amazon.Com is famous for it's smut

There are other options - Netscape, Mozilla Firefox, Opera to name a few. All of them have built-in pop-up blockers (basically, when turned on it refuses to run that line of code) and don't get bogged down by spyware add-ons & tool bars.

Yes. *sporks IE 6 for still not supporting transparency in pngs* I see no problem in using them for art, since you don't have to see my art to navigate my site. Now, if I were putting together a site that was going to get lots of traffic, it'd be an issue... Firefox rocks. The Zoid, and the browser.

Considering that some of my photoshop files are over 12 meg, that would be a very bad thing.

Not to mention silly, since it couldn't possibly show the layers and such that that would be the only reason for wanting that...for a flat image without jpg's smush or gif's color limitation, there's png.
