I found the list of visual edits I wanted... While watching one of the new dvds I got, I noticed that Rheese lacks eyelashes and is flat-chested.
It occurred to me that Rheese resembled a certain male character from Tenchi in Tokyo.
And among the edited scenes I found was one where Fiona seems to take notice of Rheese's flat chested-ness, which Rheese seems bothered by. The voice actor was clearly a girl, but the voice itself would work for a young boy character.
Is Rheese a male in the Japanese version?

Let's put it this way. You're female, and have a flat chest. Wouldn't YOU be bothered if someone pointed that out?

I would take it as a compliment.
Riese is physically female—there's boobs enough in that scene, plus the catsuit SRDX figure >_>;. I have a similar build and routinely get mistaken for a boy when I wear looser clothes. (edit) Dangit, I can't find the old official stuff, but Zoids Dictionary has her as as a girl (who looks like a boy), and it's usually very accurate.
I'd argue she's a bit debateable mentally from the general attitude/vibes I get, but that's getting into the realms of fanon and confusing the easily confused. And reminds me I have some half-finished writing.

Yeah, she's got just enough chest to make it pretty clear she's female. It varies from scene to scene, but the Zoids anime aren't exactly known for their loving attention to detail when it comes to character animation.
...it's also interesting that in the Japanese version Ryss refers to herself with a (traditionally) masculine personal pronoun.

...if you didn't mean that as an insult, I would suggest a different way of putting it :p.

Yes, she could've been upset for the other reason...
So they're just making fun of her being a boyish girl? Obviously it wouldn't be the first case of a dub changing gender, so I wanted to run it by you guys.
LOL, someone else whose addicted to tvtropes?

i don't think Fiona was making fun of Rheese, I think she was just suprised by what she felt when she tried to push Rheese away.

I wish I could make out what Riese says before the kill youuu bit in that clip. It's too fuzzy and my spoken Japanese too crap.
And ahh, dub sex swappage. Sometimes it's even unintentional, given how Japanese does pronouns and how ambiguous art styles can be. Legacy seems to have confused Riese for a guy, though that could be a copypaste error given its...lovely translation otherwise.
TV Tropes is addictive, yes. I should start taking series recommendations from what it links together more often, given how accurate it was about Gurren Lagann.

I didn't mean Fiona, just the show...
You're sure legacy was wrong? I can't tell if you're being sarcastic about its translation. I want to play it though...

I have a section on my site devoted to its more messed up translations, because they're often funny. In fact, they make the game more interesting to play than a proper translation would have!

wiki has it as
Reese is an ancient Zoidian with a blue organoid named Spucular. She pilots a Double Sworder, and later upgrades to a Geno Saurer.

I would say she is a girl in order to have a balance Van/Fiona vs Raven/Reese teamup.

I didn't see Rheese as anything but female in my mind.
