Just a small note. Compared to many other things in Japan it's actually not that expensive and Japan is where this is being marketed, aimed at an older audience than the original zoids to boot.

Various guesses are talked about also between users in Japan. Cost of metal mold,Ballooning oil prices and Other reasons. I'd have to agree with the oil prices issue, they are causing havoc with prices in general. Damn, and l really wanted one of these, l'll hav to think twice now

I've said it before: the only way to combat high prices is with low prices, which induce more business and re-lower the prices

This is exactly why I see a model announced and begin stuffing little bits of money into an account for it. $100, $200, it's all the same to me, so long as I don't feel I'm being ripped. With shipping this Saurer will run me $90, which is a little more than a DS kit imported from Singapore. That isn't outrageous to me... and the US dollar has fallen to 75% of its value from just a few years ago, so the higher price is not unexpected. I've already pre-ordered one.

When we first got wind of this, I almost went through the roof, I was very excited for Geno to get the HMM treatment. The bad proportioning on the finished product just leaves me cold though That, and the price. I'm just not understanding the price hike on this guy compared to the other Koto's. Especially with the lower number of pieces than Shieldy I was really looking forward to a Limited Geno..I could probably even get over the odd head/neck combo, but with the LTD's being priced even higher than the standard models, I will probably have to pass on this one altogether I am still not convinced that buyers, Japanese or otherwise, are going to go for this much of a price hike. Here's to hoping I am able to pick one up on clearance...yeah, I know..wishful thinking. It could happen though

It's a debatable matter, things aren't generally cheap in Japan, zoids has had it pretty easy till recently

Sorry, mystick, I don't think anything we've seen so far can justify such a hike. Almost twice what the shieldy cost, for something not much bigger or more complex? These are generally about the same amount of plastic and complexity as MG gundams, right? Those are $30-40, right? Maybe $50-60 for really fancy ones (not including the GIANT ones). Are MGs about to start getting price hikes too? Or is there a typo in geno's listing, and he actually has like a ton more parts than shieldy? WILL it fix me some breakfast in the morning? Is my power company running koto now (THAT would explain the hike)

I'd be inclined to think you guys don't see that much of the Japanese hobby market then. It's a place where minor differences can run cost differences of over 5,000 yen. Compared to other similar products, yes the HMM Geno is startlingly more expensive but compared to the wider Japanese market it's not that bad.
So again, if anything the world of sci-fi model kits has had it fairly easy. I can get a Tamiya 1:24 car kit with hardly any parts and have it cost me over 2,000 yen. Not complex, not that many parts, still fairly pricey. Plane kits of similar style to the HMM kits can go well over 10,000 yen with ease.
