When one enters the cockpit they will realise that it is as spacious as the cockpits of other Zoids. In other words it is a bit cramped. The seat is fitted with cushions and is designed to stay in one piece, even during heavy attacks. Integrated into the seat is the system for the Bio-glove Interface. Located above the armrests are the two horizontal Control Sticks. To the pilot’s forward view arc is the Forward HUD and the Operation Screens. To the pilot’s left and right are the Periphery HUDs. Heads Up DisplayAll Zoids utilise a Head Up Display (HUD) for the pilots viewing purposes. Visual sensors within the Bio Ant’s optics create a forward display not dissimilar to a standard Zoid HUD. This is termed the Forward HUD. However the periphery vision of the Bio Ant utilizes another system which is contained within the Bio Zoid’s compound optics. The periphery vision consists of a Fish-eye viewer to both sides of the Forward HUD. These viewers are known as Periphery HUDs. The major aspect of the Periphery HUDs is their magnification properties because the object in the centre appears closer than it actually is. All up the Bio Ant’s HUDs are designed to integrate the designs of both normal and Bio Zoids. Control SystemOne of the most notable things about a Bio Zoid is its Control System which utilizes electrical signals instead of the manual system found in normal Zoids. Gigardo uses mainly robots to pilot the Bio Zoids because they share the same electrical signals. A select number of people are able to pilot a Bio Zoid due to a combination of extensive training and/or compatible synapse signals. This requires the pilot to wear a cumbersome suit which turns the pilot’s bio signals into commands that the Bio Zoid can recognise. As such most people require extensive training to perform this task. However the Western Colonial Alliance has developed a system which integrates aspects of the Bio Zoid Interface with standard Zoid Control Systems. The Bio Ant’s Control System is designed to resemble that of a normal Zoid as closely as possible. The Control System is divided into three main components: i - Control Sticks ii - Bio-glove interface iii - Operation Screens Control SticksMounted on either side of the cockpit near the chair is a pair of horizontal control sticks. As with most Zoids these control sticks are used to govern the Bio Ant’s movements and weapon systems. Each control stick includes a trigger located underneath the index finger and another underneath the thumb. Each trigger can be calibrated to a certain function depending upon the pilot’s preferences. Bio-glove InterfaceThe Western Conloniall Alliance has managed to produce a cut down version of the Bio Zoid Interface. It is in fact a glove designed to be worn on the pilot’s dominant hand. The purpose of the Bio-glove Interface is to provide shortcuts depending upon muscle and finger movement. For example a small twitch of the pinky finger will activate the Damage Report program. Operation ScreensLocated underneath the Forward HUD is a series of view screens concerned with the Bio Ant’s operations. Readouts include the Bio Ant’s weapon systems which include data on remaining ammunition and current targets. The Radar readout is one of the most important and includes a list of friendly and enemy units. The Damage readout informs the pilot of the Bio Ant’s armour and structure integrity. Other readouts are provided as well. The cockpit:

The Western Colonial Alliance The Western Colonial alliance (or WCA) is a nation on the edge of the Western Continent formerly named Europa. Because of the many Earthquakes in this area during the great catastrophe the ground moved upwards pulling with it vast amounts of metals and other minerals that are of value. The Gigardo Empire was the first of the newly founded nations to notice this, and quickly sent settlers to start a colony near the minerals. Eventually other nations sent settlers to form colonies as well. After so long the colonies fought over specific plots of land. The battles were ruining the land that these men coveted as their own. It was only after the governor of the Gigardo colony named Tyrann Fuhrer noticed this that he called for a meeting of colonial leaders. The leaders all agreed that this crisis needed to end, so they unified under one banner. The nations that the colonies originated from did not mind so much that they had seceded from them, because they knew how valuable the resources there are and that it was right not to have a war there. Though the WCA is a peaceful nation a civil defense force was established in order to make sure other nations did not steal natural resources or harm the nation in any way. The president Tyrann Fuhrer appointed Colonel EmperorGojulas as commander of the entire defense force and Major Rock as the historical record keeper and commander of the 108th artillery division that protects the capital city. The Western Colonial Alliance has never had a war since the country was first founded. This is because of their willingness to share their resources and their newly founded zoid production laboratories were going to be used to provide other nations with weapons at a reasonable price. The latest zoid project in the laboratories is a new ant type zoid that is not only a soldier zoid, but a construction unit as well. This zoid is being designed for our close ally the Gigardo Empire. The engineers in charge of designing this are Captain Gren Ramiel, a former Gigardo soldier and engineer and a subordinate directly under the president, Lieutenant Blademirage2, another former Gigardo soldier and engineer that worked with the designers of the bio-armor system, and Corporal Gilead, a talented engineer and top graduate of the WCA University who majored in mechanical and electronic engineering. Excerpts from the Journal of Capt. G. Ramiel, Chief Engineer, Third R & D Division.
“I tell ya, it’s been a while since I last designed a Zoid, after the accident five years ago I was demoted to a petty matenance job by the higher ups. I’ve worked my way back up to Chief Engineer since then, but I tell ya, those damn punks upstairs still have it out for me, or so I thought anyway up until a few days ago. I must admit I was quite shocked to be called before the President himself, and even more shocked when he commissioned me to design a new Zoid using new technology from the mainland. Apparently the WCA has formed an alliance with the Empire, and as a former Gigardo engineer I’ve been selected to head the project for their mass produced Bio Zoid. Bio Zoid eh? I had heard rumors but I never paid them much attention before this, it seems I have some new toys to play with.”
“Perhaps I’m just getting old, but I just can’t seem to pin down the design for this new Zoid. This technology is impressive, but I just don’t have the budget to create something truly unique.”
“I have it! The perfect specimen for the task at hand! I found it after I went out for air earlier today for inspiration. I was walking when I saw a lizard raid an ant colony, and an army of them swarmed out of the nest to defend it from their would be attacker. Intrigued, I ventured closer to the battle, the lizard flailing, trying to free itself from it’s insect foes, the ants, biting and stinging their far larger enemy, fearlessly toppling their colossal opponent. I thought to myself, this is it, a mass produced zoid that can overwhelm enemies with it’s superior numbers and ferocity, it was these guys. Snapped out of my daze by a pain in my leg, I noticed one of the bugs had found it’s way over to me, with others closing in behind it, I speared it with the tip of a pencil I had in my coat pocket, and made a hasty retreat with my specimen in hand.”
“This Bio Armor is remarkable stuff, it has fascinating properties, I’d love to tinker with it and perhaps improve upon it one day, but with my budget for this project, for now I’ll just have to use what Gigardo gave us.”
“I was asked to make the Zoid modular earlier today, apparently this will save money in the long run by using one Zoid as a base and designing upgrades for it to operate in a variety of situations. This way a new Zoid won’t have to be created each time, Feasible, but annoying as I have to redesign the unit now.”
“It seems the Ants had great potential as a construction unit, and as such the first equipment alterations designed reflect upon this feature. Hopefully the versatility of this new unit will pull it’s weight in the field.”
“I was confronted by the test pilots again today, they’ve been demanding I design some guns for them for their prototypes. I was opposed to the idea at first, not wanting to redesign the Zoid at this stage of the process, but creating a melee unit just wouldn’t work in the long run. I looked over the unit, and shifted some components around in the Abdomen on the computer to see if it can allow space for ammo storage. The refit work surprisingly well, and I had the gun nuts on my staff design some Machine Guns to be mounted on the hard points on the side of the ant.”
“The retooled prototypes were sent out today for testing the new Machine Cannon’s I had the tech boy’s design. Personally I thought they worked rather well, but sure enough those test pilots came back complaining that there’s not enough punch in the guns, saying they can’t stop larger opponents with them, demanding I redo them. I told them they can shove it, next thing you know I get punched in the face and a big fight breaks out between the tech staff and the test pilots. damn hire-ups blame me for the whole incident, I just smiled to myself though, considering I answer directly to the President, there’s not much they can do to me anymore.”
“I tell ya, when the President first assigned this Gilead kid to be my assistant I thought he was just one of those University punks who ‘thought’ they new everything. But I have to say, this kid knows his stuff, he was able to simplify the Bio Zoid control system in ways I never thought of. I have some newfound respect for the kid, for a brat fresh out of Uni he’ll be going places, I can tell. We tested this control glove of his today, and other for the usual bugs it seems to be shaping up nicely, another week or two of R & D and those bugs should be taken care of.”
“Tch! Those Military guys have been breathing down our necks again, they just won’t leave us alone about the weaponry on the Bio Ants. Despite being CP capable by removing the rear hatch on the armor, to them that still isn’t enough as they can’t load every unit with a CP. It’s a valid argument, but still more work for us, I have the youngin’s working on a Flame Thrower right now, but it’s very unrefined since we’ve have to keep it cheap.”
“The first test sorties have begun this week, the test units are being put up against some bandits in the mountains, I can’t wait to hear the results.”
“It seems the test units have performed rather well, and will continued to be used to suppress the Bandits, Outlaws, and other Criminals in the undeveloped regions of the WCA. It seems I have also been commissioned to design new weapons to aid in this. I guess work’s not finished yet.”
“Reports have been coming in lately, the Flame units are to be recalled for more R & D. Apparently enemy snipers have taken to ‘pinging’ the fuel cells mounted on the sides of the Ants mounted with the flame unit. Needless to say, the end results have been a lot louder than a ping, the pilots have come to call them the ‘Grave Diggers’ since you’re digging your own grave if you use one of them.”
“The Laser Cutter has been officially recalled and discontinued today, apparently the coolant issues are worse than I thought. The heat generated by the beam has been melting the barrels of the tool…let me rephrase that, weapon, since the military boys decided it was better used to cut down Zoids than materials for construction. No matter, it’s useless now, I worried that the budget wouldn’t allow us to create an efficient energy weapon, but with the Military rushing us we never got sufficient testing time for the cutter. Heh, I’ll have to be certain to use this against them at my next budget meeting.”
“I had a meeting with the president today, apparently a couple of the bandit groups have formed an alliance to combat the new units, and have managed to somehow get their hands on a few Genosaurer’s. With Gigardo’s decision whether or not to buy the unit’s design from us only a month away we’ve been ordered to step up the rollout date of the WCA’s defense force units to quell this threat and show Gigardo the effectiveness of the unit. It was then that I asked the President to increase our budget if even only a little bit. I revealed the design for the Pulse Rifle I have been working on in secret to him in an attempt to gain his support. The weapon fires a three shot burst of ‘Energy Bullets,’ the weapon unfortunately has overheating issues, redlining after five or six burst if a sufficient cool down time isn’t allowed. However, the weapon has shown a moderate stopping power in simulations, and I’m certain it would work on a medium sized Zoid in actual combat, and if multiple units are used it should take down those Genosaurer’s as well. The President was skeptical, but he gave the go ahead for six units to be made for the assault against the Bandit Alliance.”
“With the initial test units failing from the prolonged battles against the Bandit forces Genosaurers the new Production Models had to be rolled out of the factory ASAP. Although reports state that one of the Genosaurers fell to the test units combined tactics the other two mopped up the battered machines without much resistance, the pilots are either Dead or MIA it seems. An infiltration mission has been initiated, and the Units are being prepped as I write this. The mission calls for the last two test units, outfitted with the worker gear to tunnel to the bandits base at Mt. Aronaught, they began two days ago and should be in position within the next few hours. The Production Models, meanwhile will use diversionary tactics and battle the enemies Zoid forces, while this diversion is taking place the Test Units are to locate any POW’s and rescue them, leaving the mop up to the Defense Forces. I’m having my team fit the Pulse Rifles into place now, I…hope they work, Genosaurers are tough opponents, if the units fail those CPC’s will massacre our guys. I better triple check the startup procedure, other than Gilead and a few others, those brats can’t do anything right without me.”
“I’ve been asked to accompany Major Rock’s 108th Artillery Unit into the field so I can personally survey the battle. It’s been years since I last piloted a Zoid, let alone in combat, but I don’t need to worry since I’m just supposed to record and not fight. Heck, they’ve even ordered me to pull back once the rescue portion of the mission it complete and the Major’s unit moves in for the mop up.”
“We’ve reached the standby point and I’ve moved my Helcat into position on top of a ridge overlooking the battle which has already begun. I’ve begun to record the battle, wondering how the rescue op is going, I wonder if those pilots my tech boys got into a fight with are still alive?…I was snapped out of my thoughts when a flash of blinding light shot across the battle field, leaving three melted husks that were once Bio Zoids. A CPC! One of the Genosaurers marched into battle along the smaller Rev Raptors the Bandits more commonly used. A defensive line was formed and the Bio Ants switched into attack mode, rearing up on their hind legs and bringing their abdomens and weapons to the fore. Fire was exchanged and several of the Rev Raptors fell, but the Genosaurer boldly charged in firing it’s Pulse Cannons burning another of the Ants into slag. The units with the Pulse Rifle’s charged in from around a hill, where they were awaiting the Saurers to appear, the Genosaurer turned to face this new threat, but was hit with a volley of Pulse shots, it started to topple from the combined blast, and received another volley before it hit the ground, silencing it for good.”
“I was so absorbed into the battle that I barely heard the all clear from the rescue team. Even though I was ordered to pull back once the signal was given I just couldn’t tear myself away from the battle. Two more of the Bio Ants had fallen to the Rev Raptors, but about a dozen of their units had fallen as well, another Flash from a CPC had lanced across the battlefield, straight for the units with the pulse Rifles! No I thought to myself as four of the units were molten into slag. The other two retreated behind the hill, of the first thirty-two units, nine had already fallen just hours after they were rolled out, but considering they’re up against Genosaurer’s, things could be worse. Major Rock ordered me to fall back over the com, he was about to engage the enemy, but I stayed, I had to be certain the machines my team made could hold it’s own. A dozen of the Ants charged the Saurer as the Major’s Artillery Unit bombarded the Bandit’s base, the Saurer took out two as they swarmed him, but the Ants Electrified Jaws were stunning the movements of the Saurer, just like the Ants I saw nearly a year ago take down their large lizard foe. A couple coordinated their attacks, firing the corrosive acid from their snouts at the Saurers face, damaging it’s optics, a perfect use of the one shot weapon. The Genosaurer shook violently to free itself, but it was far too damaged at this point, the Ants injected their Pile Bunker-like stingers into its body, injecting the same corrosive acid from before. It started to sag, it’s structure weakening from the acid as it’s right arm fell away, the Ant units suddenly left their prey, and a volley of Pulse shots burned into it’s weakened armor, the last two armed with the Pulse Rifle’s stood atop the hill in triumph. It was then I decided to pull back, the battle obviously won as the Major’s unit’s made their way off the ridge and down into the valley to deal with any remnants and to help our wounded pilots.”
“I was reprimanded for disobeying orders as I expected, but nothing too harsh, our boys had pulled through, and three of the twelve test pilots were rescued, one of which was the one who punched me. I’m glad they’re alive, but I still owe that guy one.”
“The Pulse Rifle’s were deemed effective, and are to be built as optional components for the units, but due to their cost only in limited numbers. I’m almost officially finished here in the R & D of the Bio Ant, new work is on the horizon, and all that’s left is the word from Gigardo whether they want them are not. I’m hopeful that all the hard work here in the Third R & D will come to fruition, either way, I’m proud of the Zoid we’ve created, and it’ll serve in the WCA’s Zoid forces for years to come.
