It depends, doujinshi can be all over the map in terms of content and explicitness, anything from no sexual content, light romance(kissing, etc. or sometimes implied sexual relations) to hardcore sex acts. Usually the vendor(if you're buying it) will make it very clear if it is hardcore adult and not for children in the product description. Stay away from anything that says ecchi if any young children could be viewing it. Doujinshi that is advertised as yaoi is same sex couplings, usually pretty explicit. Again, doujinshi is pretty diverse in adult content, from tame(kissing) to perverse(tentacle sex). But this is for doujinshi in general. If you're just talking about Zoid doujin, while lots of it contains sexual content it probably is going to contain fairly standard stuff, nothing deviant. But this is all relative though, what wouldn't bother one person, another might find fairly shocking. If you are unsure about the product you're buying ask questions and always make sure from the seller that you know exactly what you will be getting.

to add to Sergeant Vishus, other terms to watch out for are Hentai, which is more or less a better-known term meaning the same as ecchi, and Yuri, which also means same sex couples, but usually only refers to females. You can usually get a good idea by the cover art. Hentai and Ecchi doujins almost always have the story's main character looking rather perverse, or blushing violently with the cause just off screen.

Ehrm.
Yaoi- male/male relationships Yuri- female/female
Shounen/Shoujo-ai, seems to mean the sanme thing, but appears to be much less explicit.
Doujinshi, really, is just Fan-made manga.
Ecchi and Hentai are kinda two different things, Ecchi being more art than erotic, I think.

Eh, I say it's like fanfic. A lot of scary, some really cool hiding in with it.
You don't see me googling for it, though :p.

I remember seeing somewhere that 'ecchi' is derived from the pronunciation of the letter 'H', and for a little while was a secret code for 'hentai'. Like the secret code 'pr0n', the secret didn't last very long.
In Mahoromatic's end theme, Mahoro cautions against dirty thoughts, using 'ecchi' as an adjective.

Haha, I didn't read those. I'm no fool.
But saying all doujinshi are hentai is like saying all fanfics are porn. 'tis unfair on the sane ones.

I was once told that Ecchi and Hentai have the same meaning, but varying degrees of it. In other words, both mean 'pervert,' but ecchi is a weaker version of it than hentai. Simply put, Ecchi is the nuzzling and mysteriously damp shirts, while Hentai is the innappropriate usage of an Organoid's merging ability. ...that image still burns me. Anyways, as Lady Tilly said, Doujinshi are just like our fanfics: Mostly odd tales, some scary things, and then the occasional 'Lay of The Last Minstrel.' So just swallow your stomach, lock your door, and get ta searchin. The gems are out there, you just hafta look for 'em.

And this is why I never look for Zoids comics.. That, and the times that I went on Fanfiction.net looking for Zoids fanfics still asplode my brain whenever I think of those times.

I didn't man to say that ecchi isn't erotic. It still is, just not as... as...
Okay. I mean that ecchi is... softer. More cuddling, less sex.
