I'm not very good at chemistry, but I'll tell you what I know.
Primer is gray or white paint that you paint on all of your model pieces. It has two main effects:
Paint will stick on primer much better than smooth plastic, so if your pieces are all covered with primer, you'll have an easier time painting them. Primer can help reduce then need for second coats of paint, also.
Second, it makes all of your model pieces the same color, preferably gray. Say you want to paint blue on a yellow piece and a red piece. The paint will look slightly different on each spot, because blue and yellow looks a little different than blue and red. If your pieces are all the same shade of gray, your blue will look absolutely the same all over your model, no matter where you paint it. It will all match.
Hopefully that makes sense.

I'd recommend white for brights and gray for darks. Example being white for white, grey might mess up the white that'll be on top so...

Primer is not *just* white or gray paint, it's a special type of paint that helps the final coat of paint stick to the surface and unifies the base color of all the parts. You couldn't just use gray or white paint as primer, just wanted to clear that up. -Phenotype

I think I got it. Umm... Where's the best place and best brand I could get this?

However, Flat Grey pretty much is the primer color, for Testors. And I'm assuming white primer is Flat White color.

Flat grey is about the SHADE of primer. Like Pheno said, it help paint stick and go on smooth. Plus, if you are doing an extreme color change (white to black for example) it's even more important.
Plus this may be clear but if you are going to white- you want white primer. I wasn't thinking on a custom that WAS going to be white, but used gray primer. Not a good idea!

I disagree, I used flat gray primer for Snow Horn X and Diploguns GCT and the white looks just fine. Honestly I've never even seen white primer. -Phenotype

I usually buy Krylon primer. Regular paint section. They have grey, white and a brown/rust color. Maybe I was just impatient with the coverage on my first white coat. I tend to rush sometimes.

Well, I went to Walmart yesterday and bought myself some stuff:
- Testors Flat Black Spray Paint - Testors Flat Red Spray Paint - Testors Metallic Silver Spray Paint - Colorplace Clear Spray Paint - Krylon White Primer
I got a spare Brachios that I'm experimenting on right now.
Another question: How much primer do you coat the pieces with? Enough that you can't see the piece anymore, or just enough to coat the thing?
And how do you guys coat both sides of a piece? Just wait for it to dry and turn it over or something?

I try to keep everything as thin as possible, but you've got to do both sides or else it looks really sloppy when its all put together. I learned that the hard way.
Don't put any kind of paint on too thick because you'll lose detail on the model. Only put on what meets the look you're going for, then stop.
