Just realised what was bugging me about the colour scheme, those light grey pieces should all be silver!

Ah good to know you build this as i always think about buying a dark horn HMM or harry special. Wow these parts are really small must be a pain to cut the nubs off.
It is a great kit i guess but i agree with you some colors look not as i would expect from the box.
I am looking forward to see your next building steps thanks!

I just finished the neck and the build is getting back to normal, no more crazy tiny parts but I realised I'll be using a lot of the light grey I don't like next so I've stopped to paint it silver first. I just sprayed on grey primer but have no silver spray left at the moment so dug out my airbrushes, I haven't used an airbrush in 25 years! And that new shiny one has never been used or that compressor! I bought them years ago but stuck to cans as they are less hassle when you know good makes. Got the bigger compressor and a simpler airbrush too if I need to speed things up since this is just a spray job not a piece of art right now.

Hehehe. Bust. So far at least I really like the look of it, it's nice that not all HMM kits mess with the classical proportions and overall timeless look. Just most of them. Buuuut Red Horn transparent green canopy eyes on a Dark Horn? Isn't that sacrilege?

For me who am just starting an actual zoid collection the horn type is one of those I'm looking for and the HS is one of the those I was looking at so this is pretty useful while waiting for my first zoids to arrive.

Buuuut Red Horn transparent green canopy eyes on a Dark Horn? Isn't that sacrilege? You lost me with the "bust" part, do you mean "busted" because I haven't used an airbrush in years? As for the green canopy, Harry is an independent arms dealer/ spoiled brat so I don't think any faction colours would be appropriate for him or his business, my OER Red Horn has grey cockpit canopies whilst most Red Zoids have red lenses don't they? Just checked, all Dark Horns' have green lenses, do you mean they should be opaque like the animie? When the internal cockpit is painted silver it will act as a reflector making the green look brighter, in theory at least.

Thanks for the latest pics! The more i see the more i like the design and proportions. Depending the color mix i am still unsure as the dark horn with green caps looks very good in my eyes will be interesting to see the Harry Special with more building effort.

He has all the gold as he's the rich kid so his toys are all blinged out! .
The next bit is all about novice airbrushing.
I made an airbrush cleaning/dump mug quickly out of some scrap lying around as I realised I didn't have one, just used foam as a filter, seems to work fine. I then grabbed some silver acrylic model paint and diluted it down to the "milk" like texture airbrushes seem to like and just went for it in my spray booths. Had a couple of issues with leaking connectors and water trap so I just ditched the water trap after a few unsuccessful fixes with Teflon tape and silicone grease. I then suffered a few blockages because I forgot to clean the silicone grease out of the system first so that helped mess up the paint finish, I'd also grabbed the wrong silver paint so the silver flakes were too big and had a tendency clog the airbrush too. So I let everything dry then had another go using the correct silver especially made for airbrushes with super fine flakes (typical, any colour not metallic would have been ok) and the difference was immediate and so satisfying! The finish of course is now miles better as you can compare the results in the pics below, the initial pics being of the first attempt and the ones further down of the second spray using the correct paint (the bottle on the right in the comparison pic, not the one on the left that I used first). I guess the main thing learnt is that worrying about your mix ratio is pretty pointless if you're using the wrong paint to start with!
First attempt that failed:
second attempt, much better and happy with it, also run out of paint as I had only a few drops to start with!

I'm glad to hear about another new collector and that this may help you! Look at the box. Teehee, it says 'bust'! Yeah obviously by this point in the future (isn't it like, some ludicrously long time like 6000 years?), factions are irrelevant, but my point is that dark horns are guylos zoids and the opaque glowing green eyes (sometimes under a secondary smoky canopy) and body parts are their trademark! Including all the neon green but then giving it the transparent green eyes from a Red Horn is weird. It would have to be a deliberate change. I didn't know the original had gray eyes, but it depends on era.. most of the old zenevas red zoids had red eyes, but the new guylos from the anime-centric eras was mostly green eyes overall, and never red eyes on red because it doesn't show up as well

I guess I missed a lot in 30 years, not that I even really knew what the original story was as we didn't get comics for them in Greece. I'd have to wait until we went back to Ireland for holidays to even find Zoids.

This is one of my most desired HMM kits... I would LOVE to get my mitts on one! Thanks for doing this whole WIP review! Really? I would have thought with your post-count you would have an army of them by now! , they are still available on eBay and Amazon, Amazon can be cheaper though so worth checking.
Started assembling some of the silver painted parts so his body's coming along now. I've taken a few pics of him as is next to the OER Red Horn and I'm surprised to see his head is actually smaller than the OER, I think his body might be bulkier later on than the OER judging by the placement of the vents on his back, this would make sense and be more in proportion to the actual animal he's based on...I think...

I thought the weapons would be the most complicated parts but nope, the legs are. This is just the smaller front pair! Look nearly done right? Wrong! 95% of these parts still need to be trimmed and mounted on just the front legs!
