So I ended up choosing the Zoids VS series for my next set of monthly translations. No, it's not just for LoveGame and the Zoids Wiki's sake... it's part of a secret project I'm working on
This month's translation covers the first half of the Republic Mission Mode. Yeah, it's not exactly the most complex of storylines...



Shortly after its establishment, the prototype combat testing platoon "Blue Unicorn" had some new recruits assigned.
Albane: "Now then, are you the recruits joining my platoon?"
Zan: "Zan Fel, sir!"
Tita: "Tita Breeze, sir!"
Albane: "I'm Albane, your commanding officer."
Albane: "I expect you know this, but this platoon mainly tests new Zoid models."
Albane: "Let's get straight to business. First off, we'll perform mock combat using a new Zoid."
Tita: "At last, Zan!"
Zan: "Yeah, let's go for it!"
Albane: "Move out, rookies!"
Zan & Tita: "Roger!!"

MISSION-01: "Blue Unicorn Platoon"

Tita: "Imperial troops confirmed inside the base! It's a surprise attack!!"
Albane: "Rats! We won't be able to put up a fight in mock combat units. We'll just have to escape!"
Tita: "Captain, watch out!!"
Albane: "!!"
Albane: "Urk..."
Zan: "Captain!!"
Albane: "I-I'm okay, don't worry..."
Zan: "But Captain..."
Albane: "Nothing to worry about! Never mind that, let's get out of here...!"
Albane: "...Ghack!!..."
Zan: "Captain!!"
Tita: "It's no use! In his condition..."
Albane: "I'm sorry... Leave me and escape on your own."
Zan: "Captain!! Tita and I will hold these guys back."
Zan: "You escape in the meantime."
Albane: "Zan... Tita..................... I'm sorry..."
Albane: "Don't go overboard, okay? Just focus on surviving!"
Albane: "I'll back you up as much as I can!"
Zan & Tita: "Roger!!"

MISSION-02: "The Back and Forth of War"

Zan: "Why'd it have to be at a time like this!?"
Tita: "...Something seems odd."
Albane: "Looks like it's an Imperial tiger force."
Tita: "They're coming this way!"
Albane: "We'll be at a disadvantage if we wait here. Okay, we'll make the first move!"
Albane: "Let's go!!"
Zan & Tita: "Roger!!"

MISSION-03: "Surprise Attack"

Tita: "Now Blue Unicorn can go into full-fledged action."
Republic soldier: "Oh no! The Empire Army has begun an attack on the city!"
Zan: "What! Why...?"
Republic soldier: "We don't know! The enemies were invisible, so we were slow to detect them."
Albane: "Optical camouflage...?"
Albane: "Zan, Tita, let's go! Blue Unicorn, move out!"
Zan & Tita: "Roger!!"

MISSION-04: "Fierce Attack"

Tita: "But at this distance from the air base, if we leave now, we might not make it in time..."
Zan: "Captain!"

Albane: "Its opponents are an Imperial platoon."
Tita: "What on earth is going on?"

Max: "What, you two know each other?"
Reiner: "I have a bit of a history with him."
Claudia: "Reiner! You can talk about the past later!"
Albane: "Let's go! Move out!"

Leviathe: "You there, Republic troops! If you're going to meddle in others' business, then prepare to die!"

MISSION-06B: "The Empire's Circumstances"

The Death Stinger disappeared.
Blue Unicorn ended up temporarily cooperating with the Imperial platoon, "Rottiger".
Reiner: "We've defeated the Death Stinger, so why are we joining hands with these guys?"
Max: "In our current state, there's not much else we can do."
Claudia: "We're in no condition to fight..."
Tita: "A group of Molgas is approaching!"
Albane: "What? Is it the Empire?!"
Tita: "No, their affiliation is unclear."
Max: "Sure is busy around here."
Zan: "Hey, you..."
Albane: "Max, wasn't it?"
Max: "Hmm? What?"
Albane: "You lot will just get in the way. Retreat."
Max: "!!"
Max: ".....................I give you my thanks."
Albane: "Get going."
Albane: "Zan, Tita, let's go!!"
Zan & Tita: "Roger!!"

MISSION-07B: "Premonition"

WHat zoids do each unlock for use in the story? Though I from experience the harder missions in vs 2 don't really have any mission mode unlockables worth making the game harder.

Okay, I've added in the equipment and Zoid unlocks for each mission. Unless you're trying to see everything (or setting yourself challenges), there's not much point in choosing the harder missions, and you definitely want the Blade Liger from Mission-05A, because laser blades are hilariously overpowered in VS1.

While I've still got some time until I get to VS2, there's a question I'd like to ask everyone reading this. In VS2, Shoma Cheval refers to Zan as "senpai". A lot. (For those who don't watch any anime, "senpai" is a respectful term used for upperclassmen/seniors in one's school or job.) Battle Legends translates this as "Senior Pilot", but I think that feels a bit unwieldy and silly. So, as the readers, what approach would you like me to take? I could break my "no honorifics" policy and leave it as "senpai", but that might put off people who aren't used to Japanese media. I could replace it with whatever seems most appropriate in each instance, but that would lose the effect of Shoma using the same "catchphrase" all the time. Or I could try to find a decent English equivalent, but I'm not confident I could find anything better than "Senior Pilot". What do you guys think?

Zan: "Captain! I can't bear running away any more!"
Albane: "We're not running this time, Zan."
Albane: "Our orders this time are to defeat the Empire."
Tita: "Do we have a strategy?"
Albane: "We'll lie in wait and ambush the Imperial troops in the valley."
Albane: "Don't let your guard down!!"
Zan & Tita: "Roger!!"

MISSION-08: "Counterattack"

Tita: "It's... it's Republic troops."
Zan: "What did you say!?"
Albane: "What's going on? ...At any rate, right now we have no choice but to fight back!"
Albane: "Let's go!!"
Zan & Tita: "Roger!!"
Lezard: "It seems you thought me an ally and got yourself confused, Albane."

MISSION-09: "Traitors to the Republic?"

Albane: "You can thank me for that."
Albane: "Oops, I guess this isn't the time for chit-chat."
Tita: "The enemy Zoids have invaded the base!!"
Zan: "Here they come!"
Albane: "Zan, Tita! Let's go!!"

MISSION-10: "Popular People"

Albane: "It doesn't seem like it's just a false alarm."
Tita: "But there's also a chance that it's a trap set up by the Empire."
Zan: "If they're developing a new Zoid, we can't just stay quiet about it."
Albane: "Let's go investigate!! Blue Unicorn, move out!!"
Zan & Tita: "Roger!!"

MISSION-11: "Tip-off"

Albane: "Why are you doing this?!"
Lezard: "I have no need to tell you."
Zan: "Huh!? You know him, Captain?"
Albane: "Zan! Tita! Be careful! He's a powerful enemy!"
Zan: "We're only up against two Zoids! I'll take 'em down!!"
Gard: "Heh... You're underestimating Terra Geist."
Albane: "Blue Unicorn, move out!!"

MISSION-13: "Conspiracy"

Zan: "Awesome! This'll make for an easy win!!"
Albane: "So it's finally complete."
Republic soldier: "Oh no!! Terra Geist is attacking!!"
Viper: "You Republic wretches are no match for us!"
Zan: "Captain!"
Albane: "Blue Unicorn! Move out!!"
Zan & Tita: "Roger!!"

MISSION-14: "Launch the Gojulas Giga"

Tita: "Captain! We've found Terra Geist."
Albane: "Hmm?"
Albane: "Isn't that Rottiger I can see near Terra Geist?"
Tita: "Captain! It's a transmission from Rottiger."
Zan: "What!?"
Tita: "I'll put it through."
Max: "This is Sergeant Major Max."
Albane: "This is Captain Albane."
Max: "We have our own situation, so I'd like to make a proposal."
Albane: "A proposal?"
Max: "We're pursuing Terra Geist just like you. Could we form a united front here?"

Albane: "Very well. If we have the same goal, there's no need to refuse."
Viper: "Heh heh heh... The Republic and the Empire are nothing before Terra Geist!"

Tita: "What's that supposed to mean?"
Albane: "Tita!"
Max: "Ah, well. We did manage to defeat the enemy."
Albane: "I don't intend to write about this incident in the official report."
Max: "I agree. I don't want us to get each other caught up in trouble."
Max: "Young'un, Zan, was it?"
Max: "You look to have some promise. Keep working your hardest, okay?"
Zan: "You too, old man!"
Max: "...Good grief..."
Claudia: "Cute kid."
Tita: "...Zan, you idiot."
Terra Geist. The flames lurking within the Empire were still flickering.

MISSION-15B: "Final Battle With the Death Saurer"

However, this didn't mean that "Terra Geist" had been extinguished. The flames crawling within the Empire were still flickering.

Not sure about replacing "senpai" but I can agree that since you get a GOjulas the Ogre and a giggles no matter what there really is no reason to do the "B-side" missions

Also "senior pilot" did seem awkward

This'll be great! Thanks for all the work so far~ Always wondered a lot about that batch of pilots.

For honorifics, maybe just Sir? It's not necessarily accurate but kinda carries the same ... tone, I guess? And doesn't sound too out of place in a combat unit setting.

Not quite the quantity of responses I was hoping for...
I'll see how well "sir" fits once I get to VS2, but it doesn't feel as... "catchphrase-y" as Shoma's constant use of "senpai". Plus it would be a bit weird to have him calling Zan "sir" all the time but not Albane. I'm hoping someone can come up with something more fitting before I start on VS2...

Anyway, time for the Empire Mission Mode, which is actually completely linear until the final battle. It is a bit longer than the Republic one, though, and slightly more consistent with its times of day



At the Empire Army's development base... Tests were being run on a Zoid strengthening program.
Claudia: "It's suddenly gone berserk in mid-test?!"
Max: "What the heck is going on...!"
Reiner: "More importantly, commander!!"
Claudia: "I know. It appears something has gone wrong with the strengthening program."
Max: "Our opponent's a Geno Saurer?"

Merry Christmas! Here's that "bonus stuff" I mentioned: translations for all the voice clips for the non-anime characters in VS1! Well, almost all - I left out any duplicates, wordless yells, and the "Zoids Versus!" and "Strike Laser Claw!" clips that basically every character in the game has. Also, I'm working directly from the game files, so there's probably several in here that aren't actually used in-game.

A quick note about honorifics: almost all the characters in VS address each other by first name without any honorifics, which is actually quite rude in Japanese unless you're very close with the person you're addressing. I'm not sure why VS does this - maybe it's something to do with the military setting, or maybe they're trying for a more Western feel, or maybe it's just an excuse to remind us of the characters' names more often. Anyway, there are only a couple of exceptions. Firstly, the Terra Geist members refer to Viper as "Viper-sama", a respectful and formal mode of address which I've rendered as "Lord Viper". Secondly, Tita calls Reiner "Reiner-kun", which is unusually friendly and casual given that they're enemy soldiers - this suggests that Tita and Reiner already know each other somehow. Thirdly, there are quite a few examples of the derogatory not-really-an-honorific め, which I've mostly translated as a variety of animal names.

It's time for this month's translation, so here's the first half of the Republic Mission Mode from VS2! You may notice a few changes from the previous game - for one, there's actually a coherent plot this time Viper and Gard are MIA after the events of VS1 and Saga 2/Legacy respectively, but there are a couple of new characters to replace them. On the gameplay side, enemies can now spawn mid-mission, and there are a wider variety of mission objectives (including the dreaded escort missions). You also get some basic tips on how to beat each one, and the more difficult routes give you enough extra stuff that they might actually be worth playing now.
Also, this post is where the whole 'senpai' thing comes in. I wasn't kidding about Shoma using it a lot...



Planet Zi... A world where people coexist with metal lifeforms called Zoids.
Two great powers, the Republic Army and the Empire Army, commanded the Zoids and fought continuously.
Many historic battles were fought over and over, and the Zoids evolved at the hands of humans.
And as the war spread further, a battle was about to occur which nobody would ever be told of...
Blue Unicorn was a prototype combat testing platoon of the Republic Army.
Contact with the platoon's members was lost while they were carrying out a special operation.
At the same time as their disappearance, Imperial bases in the vicinity were attacked and destroyed by Zoids of unknown affiliation.
Was this the work of the missing Blue Unicorn Platoon?
And so, having been assigned to Blue Unicorn, team member Shoma was appointed to search for them.
Republic handler: "...That is all our data concerning the missing Blue Unicorn Platoon."
Republic handler: "Just before we lost contact, we received one of their regular reports from an Imperial front-line base."
Shoma: "In that case, I guess I'll just have to go to the Imperial front-line base and check directly."
Republic handler: "I'm sorry I couldn't be of much assistance... Good luck in your first battle."
Shoma: "Thank you very much!!"
Shoma headed to the Empire Army's front-line base where the Blue Unicorn members had disappeared.
Shoma: "Is that the Imperial front-line base...? Looks like there was an intense battle."
Shoma: "It's taken a lot of damage. I wonder if a heavy combat Zoid ran wild?"
Shoma: "A response on the radar! There's a Zoid approaching?"
Mysterious man: "A straggler? How dare you do this to us, Republic Army!"

Blue Unicorn Platoon managed to repel the Bloody Death Saurer.
However, Blue Unicorn also took major damage in the battle with Terra Geist, and were forced to retreat for a while.

Republic handler: "...from an Imperial radar base! It's a Republic code!!"
Republic handler: "Analysis of the individual code shows that it conforms with that of Captain Albane."

Zan: "He's been captured?! Then we've got to rescue him!!"
Shoma: "But this base is protected by quite a few Zoids."
Zan: "Nothing else for it!! We'll wipe out all the Zoids in the base!"

And here's the second half of the Republic side. This is where picking the "harder" route B can actually pay off, as the route A version of mission 14 is generally considered one of the hardest missions in the game. Route B, on the other hand, gives you Zero Schneider and its incredibly overpowered Laser Blades
Also, apparently the Cyberdrive Zoids have ZOS in this continuity. Which makes sense, I guess, seeing as they can time travel... except that Reika's description makes it sound more like a Battle Story-style Organoid System than Saga II/Legacy's ZoidCore Overload System. Oh, this franchise and its continuity troubles...



Albane: "You finally came! Zan, Tita... hmm... an unfamiliar face."
Albane: "Are you a newcomer?"
Shoma: "I'm Shoma. I've just been assigned to Blue Unicorn Platoon."
Tita: "I'm glad you're safe, Captain."
Albane: "Sorry about that. I got captured in that battle, and they brought me here."
Albane: "I've picked up all sorts of info. This base itself has defected to Terra Geist."
Albane: "Sounds like they're planning to do something or other using these things called Dataless Zoids."
Albane: "Apparently both sides, the Helic Republic and the Guylos Empire..."
Albane: "...each discovered two Dataless Zoids."
Albane: "It's not clear what they can do with them, but it's certainly nothing good."
Albane: "All right, no point in hanging around! We'll escape and pursue the enemies!!"
Blue Unicorn Platoon rescued Captain Albane and returned to their pursuit of Terra Geist.
During the pursuit, Shoma intercepted an enemy transmission.
Shoma: "Captain! I've intercepted a transmission from the Zoids that escaped the base!"
Shoma: "They're returning to Terra Geist's base!!"
Albane: "We can't let them leak the information that this base has fallen! After them!!"

And now the Empire Mission Mode. If you compare this with the first game, you can see just how much more text there is - more detail, more plot coherence, more characterisation... I mean, it's still not exactly a masterpiece, but you can see that Reiner has matured somewhat since game one. Kouki, meanwhile, is just terrible



Planet Zi... A world where people coexist with metal lifeforms called Zoids.
Two great powers, the Republic Army and the Empire Army, commanded the Zoids and fought continuously.
Many historic battles were fought over and over, and the Zoids evolved at the hands of humans.
And as the war spread further, a battle was about to occur which nobody would ever be told of...
Rottiger Team was a special mission force of the Empire Army.
The force was also known by the alias "Zenebas Hunters".
They were currently investigating the "Zenebas Empire faction" that existed within the army.
Zenebas... The Zenebas Empire had collapsed at the end of its battle with the Republic...
But Rottiger had gained intelligence that people of Zenebas had been at work within the Empire for some time...
Kouki, a member of the Empire Army's 3rd Assault Recon Force, had strayed from the rest of his force due to taking independent actions during an operation.
Kouki wandered around in his assault recon custom Zoid, the Helcat Noir.
Kouki: "My Zoid's not in great shape. Did I push it too far for a recon Zoid?"
Kouki: "This is Kouki! 4th Squad, come in!!"
Kouki: "Huh!? Am I being jammed?"
Kouki: "None of the sensors or transmitters will listen to me!"
Kouki: "It doesn't seem like they've broken down... I guess I'll check them at the base nearby."
Kouki: "I'm pretty sure it should be around here."
Relying on his memory, Kouki headed to the front-line base, but it had suffered a fierce attack...
The front-line base was in a terrible state, barely standing.
Kouki: "Wh-what is this!? Was there a bombing raid or something?"
Kouki: "The Zoids are melted... A Breaker's Charged Particle Cannon...?"
Kouki: "No, something stronger...? What the hell happened?"
Kouki: "Huh!? The sensors have come back to life? There's a Zoid response at 5 o'clock!!"
Kouki: "A straggler? How dare you do this to us, Republic Army!"
Mysterious man: "A straggler? What do you mean?!"
Kouki: "A rookie? A little chick who can't even break out of his egg?"
Mysterious man: "A little chick?!"
Kouki: "I'll give you a lecture on what combat is. You can learn firsthand!"
Mysterious man: "Okay, that's it! Prepare to be taken down!!"

After his battle with Kouki, the injured Republic soldier fled the area.
Kouki: "Anyway... This horrible sight... Is this the work of that Republic lot?"
Kouki: "It's strange, though. They haven't touched the cargo bay area."
Kouki: "It's as if they were looking for something important..."
From the attacked base, Kouki sensed a raid by someone other than the Republic, and the existence of "something" the attackers were seeking.
Kouki decided to pursue the escaped Republic Zoid.
On the way, Kouki dropped in at a base to resupply, and there he witnessed the "something".
Kouki: "Now, let's get the resupplying done quickly and chase that little chick."
Kouki: "Hmm? What's that Zoid...? A new model...?"
Empire soldier: "The enemy's attacking!"
Empire soldier: "What are the lookouts doing!? They're already inside!!"
Kouki: "Rats, no such luck. Hmm? What's going on?"
Kouki: "Even Imperial Zoids are attacking the base!"
Kouki: "A rebellion!? You traitors! Why are you teaming up with the enemy?!!"
Kouki: "They're trying to get at the new model? You rats! So you're after the new Zoid!?"
Mysterious man: "You there! Protect the right side! I'll take the left!!"
Kouki: "What!?"
Mysterious man: "Don't let the enemies near that Zoid!!"
Mysterious man: "Destroy all the enemies before that Zoid activates!"

Reiner: "Going by probability, it's Zenebas."
Kouki: "I've heard of that. Some ghost force called Terra Geist."
Reiner: "It's still too early to decide that. But if we investigate, we should learn something."
Reiner: "Let's search around inside the Empire afterwards."
Kouki: "...This is all such a pain... Meh, do what you want."
Kouki: "Hmm? What's that? There's a response on the radar. Looks like friendlies..."
Empire army soldier: "You must be Rottiger, the Republic Army conspirators!"
Reiner: "Conspirators? What are you talking about?!!"

Leviathe: "There are many former Zenebas Empire members, in the Empire and in the Republic!"

Kouki: "They're mixed up in both the Empire and the Republic...?"

After chasing off Leviathe, Kouki and Reiner decided to stop in at a nearby supply base.
Kouki: "This is a pretty old supply base. It's not even in my data."
Reiner: "I hope they have some supplies. We'll go inside and search."
Reiner: "...That's odd. Can you tell, Kouki?"
Kouki: "Yeah, there's no sign of people, and yet there's a lot of Zoid footprints on the ground."
Kouki: "Plus, this is... a mark made just recently."
Reiner: "A trap? I have a bad feeling about this."
Kouki: "What are you talking about? The enemy's going to take the trouble to come out and attack us, right!?"
Kouki: "This way makes things quicker! All the better to crush them!!"
Reiner: "You! You knew it was a trap!! And you entered this base on purpose!?"
Mysterious woman: "You've come out in force, Rottiger. But it's not good to overestimate yourself."
Reiner: "Terra Geist?!"
Kouki: "Come on, then! I'll turn you all to scrap!!"
Reiner: "Don't be ridiculous! How can we oppose this number with only two Zoids?!"
Reiner: "Don't mistake recklessness for bravery! We'll break through the siege!!"

MISSION-05: "Escape"

Description: You arrived at an Empire base to resupply, but were ambushed by Terra Geist there. Slip through the enemy encirclement and escape the base.

Reiner: "We managed to break out somehow... But why go so far as to set up a trap for us...?"
Kouki: "That woman looked to have a pretty deep grudge. Do you remember doing anything to her?"
Reiner: "Don't confuse me with yourself."
After managing to resupply at a different base, the pair gained information that a town near the border had been occupied by the Republic Army.
Empire handler: "...So please do your best not to cause damage to the city..."
Empire handler: "...and defeat the enemy forces."
Kouki: "You make it sound so easy. ...One dinner."
Empire handler: "Excuse me?"
Kouki: "Go out to dinner with me afterwards. I can have a perk like that, right?"
Empire handler: "Okay. In exchange, please be sure to do a good job."
Reiner: "Could you two be serious about this?!!"
Kouki: "Heh, don't be such a hothead. I'll do my job properly."
Reiner: "Ugh... It's strange, though. This looks less like occupation..."
Reiner: "...and more like they're waiting for something. But for what?"
Kouki: "That's not the Republic Army. It's probably a Terra Geist force."
Kouki: "They're making it look like the Republic Army occupied the town."
Reiner: "I'd like to avoid having a flashy battle all over the city."
Kouki: "Then what do we do?"
Reiner: "How about we settle this by sniping?"

MISSION-06: "Sunset Hitman"

Kouki: "So you're Rottiger's commander? I've been hoping to meet you."
Max: "I'm just a Zoid pilot. I'm not made to be a commander."
Kouki: "Oh? So the commander stands above you? Now there's someone I'd like to meet soon."
Max: "Well, you can look forward to that. Anyway, I'm glad we could join up here."
Reiner: "Did something happen?"
Max: "It's about that Dataless Zoid you were talking about a while back."
Max: "Apparently the Republic has a Dataless Zoid too."
Reiner: "The Republic has a Diablotiger too!?"
Max: "No, it's called Cyclops or something."
Max: "So, they put this Cyclops in a Hover Cargo to transport it."
Max: "But according to a transmission I intercepted earlier, it's broken down nearby."
Kouki: "Broken down? That's convenient. So naturally, you plan to take it, right?"
Max: "Well, in short, yes."
Max: "It's probably the spoils that the fake Republic troops you defeated in the city were after."
Reiner: "...What kind of secrets do the Dataless Zoids hold?"
Kouki: "We can investigate after we steal it. First, we'll crush the guards!!"
Kouki: "Sergeant Major Max, let's see those legendary fangs!!"

MISSION-07: "Recapture"

Shoma: "So the Hover Cargo was your doing!"
Kouki: "Aren't you the little chick who was at the Imperial front-line base?"
Shoma: "You're the guy from back then!"
Tita: "Zan! Looks like the Cyclops is still safe."
Shoma: "We won't hand the Cyclops over to the Empire!"
Woman's voice: "You won't be handing it over to Helic or to Guylos."
Max: "A newcomer?! It's just one after another..."
Reika: "Sorry, but Terra Geist will be taking that Cyclops."
Max: "Terra Geist! Looks like the players are all here."
Shoma: "The Zoid she's piloting... it can't be..."
Albane: "No doubt about it, that's a Bloody Death Saurer."
Zan: "I gotta admit, we'd be at a disadvantage against a Death Saurer!"

In the confusion of the battle between the Republic Army and Terra Geist, Rottiger Team quickly withdrew from the battlefield.
The "ZOS system"... They felt indescribable doubt and anxiety at those words Reika had spoken.
Reiner: "Commander. In the Dataless Zoid case, and with Terra Geist just now..."
Reiner: "I get the feeling our movements are being leaked."
Claudia: "Spies...? It doesn't seem like they'd be at the individual level."
Claudia: "There's only a limited few who could outmanoeuvre us. Maybe someone in section 3 of the Intelligence Department..."
Claudia: "Like the Silver Rabbit Force...?"
Max: "...Kouki! You were in an enforced recon team before, right?"
Max: "Are there any Empire Army intelligence bases around here?"
Kouki: "There's one, located 15 kilometres to the southwest."
Kouki: "It's a radar base where Silver Rabbit is stationed."
Kouki: "They've set up headquarters underneath the radar site."
Reiner: "......Are we going to do it?"
Max: "We'll need to make the first move."
Claudia: "All hands, prepare for combat! We'll destroy that radar site!"

MISSION-10: "Take Out the Radar"
