Too early to say if it'll actually be good, but its definitely one of my must-watch movies for this summer. As I've said before, it's a great way to get the monster's ball rolling, paving the way for Godzilla a year later.

/agrees I have mixed feelings on this one but for personal reasons... I've actually been writing a tabletop game that has some uncomfortably close parallels to this film. I've been working on my title for three years now but I've had the concept in draft since 2007. I am excited about this being the first giant monster movie since Brodrick's Godzilla (oh, what it could have been!) back in 1998 that takes the "direct approach" as an action title. No little glimpses through the movie with a partial reveal at the end like Cloverfield or The Mist. Even then, we haven't seen a giant robot movie in the western market since Robot Jox... wow, am I old.

I am personally more excited for the Legendary Pictures Godzilla movie, which WILL stay true to the original Godzilla, unlike a certain other American Godzilla movie made in the late nineties.

Is that a fact or are you giving the film makers an order? lol
Back on subject though, I think fans of the genre have been waiting for something like PR for a long time. Sure, we've seen giant robot vs giant monster fights before, but never on such a massive scale. There are what, seven mechs in this film?
Of course, humanoid mechas have never been my favorite, so unless they give me a very GOOD reason not to, I'm going to be rooting for the monsters, ^_^

No it's a fact they already showed a trailer at comic con and we confirmed that it wasn't going to be another american disaster. And on topic, what is pacific rim about exactly?

Read some of the other thread comments, or better yet, watch the trailer. In any other thread, I'd leave you to go find the information on your own, but the topic of violent giant monsters softens my heart. You still have to be a big boy and click it by yourself though, lol themoviebox.net/2146

Pacific Rim is a Del Toro salute to the genre; giant monsters are invading earth through an interdimensional rift in the Pacific Ocean... mankind must unite and builds a team of 300-foot tall robots to prevent our annihilation.

Here's the tie-in website, complete with viral promo material and technical blueprints of the Jaegers (our gargantuan robot saviors ^_^) www.panpacificdefense.com/I find it interesting that the United States' Gipsy Danger is actually the most outdated, while Austrailia's Striker Eureka is the most advanced. Anyone up for an underdog story?

Definitely. As I understand it, Gipsy Danger (why isn't it Gypsy, and why Gipsy Danger anyway?!) was the oldest because the US was attacked first and therefore the first to respond. We will either see an underdog story or a Gipsy Danger Mk2 win the day! ... Or mankind will get eaten.

I've got very high hopes for this film. Guillermo del Toro has got a great track record when it comes to movies, he rarely puts a foot wrong. I'm hoping he continues his streak with this. I love how GLaDOS (Ellen McLain) is the voice in the trailer too.
Warner Bros are definitely expecting big things too, they are already lining up plans for a sequel!

I heard that the GLaDOS voice was used specifically for the trailer only, but we'll just have to see for ourselves. Speaking of which, apparently a select few Hollywood higher-ups were invited to a special preview screening of the film over the weekend, and the response has been pretty positive.
