Actually, I would stick to an enamel for the base coat. You can get good results putting acrylic over enamel for detail, but not the other way around. Acrylics have a tendency to peel from plastics with multi coats, bulk coating, or if there is something foreign in the paintjob. Enamels still work best for a durable, even spray coat that doesnt scratch easily. You can always get thinner to get a good consistency.
