Well... having been with you guys for the past several years... its safe to say that we're more matured and creative than that now when it comes to themes. Maethius and Rayse and our other friends at ZP (and of course ZPh ;D) has upped the standards in terms of creativity and originality that would readily be on par with some of the Japanese customizers out there! While Lionel has maintained his true to the classic OER way style of customs. Having a theme will probably give a common ground for all to start from ground up! For example.. lets have a ZOO themed customs! Is it that bad an idea to make a seal, a giraffe or perhaps a hippo? ;D -Grimm

I think that sort of theme is a good idea. It's always hard when you have to judge a masterful repaint versus a completely unique build versus an exceptional diorama. For the Grand Prix I would almost suggest an open theme but restricting it to custom builds of an individual Zoid. In other words, you can make any kind of Zoidy animal form that requires physical alteration/kit bashing/scratch building (not merely a re-color or popping Blox parts onto an existing Zoid), and no diorama; the kit must stand on its own merits. I made a more detailed backdrop for my customs to add a little interest and help with some filming issues, but I would have to strip it down to just the panels to avoid the diorama theme.
I like themes because it lets us judge paint to paint, diorama to diorama, and build to build. But for the Grand Prix it's hard to judge one against the other. Lionel would say just to vote on your overall impression, but I score models on technical aspects as well as fit and finish. I am still only an adequate painter, so I've kind of compensated with complexity.
Anyone else have ideas on how a Grand Prix should go?

I'd rather go sans theme on this contest, it seems like we haven't done that in a long time.
As for the Grand Prix, I was thinking either top three from Open move on (a benefit of, well, enteringin the Open category), or a later vote between the top three from Limited, and top three from Open.

Im gonna personally open a qualifying contest at ZPh as well... and come to think of it... its great that you guys see the point of having some ground rules/themes to follow.. it actually wont restrict our creativity... it will challenge it past our comfort zones! ;D if i was to make a Dodo bird as opposed to Maethius' creation... it will probably boil down as to how well we represented the respective animals that we tried to simulate. ;D But since ZP has already finished an open theme.... we have got to think of an option to make all succeeding contest be on equal level so when the time comes to enter the big finale... no one will be left behind! Just my 2 cents guys! -Grimm

Open themes are good, just put in limits as to what is considered open and what is not.
It's better to have a diorama contest alone, paint contest alone while open theme means anything goes but to have more than a repaint, more than a custom but a kitbash that will mean a whole new zoid. But to be specific on just making a type of zoid would in my opinion limit entries (which is good for some) but really boring when you're competing against 3 or 4 entries.
well, I might not make sense now but I hope you guys pull through with something good. I just love a contest.

As for the Grand Prix, I was thinking either top three from Open move on (a benefit of, well, enteringin the Open category), or a later vote between the top three from Limited, and top three from Open. For the qualification to the Grand Prix, do as you will. Now, for the votes for the Grand Prix, as I will be the one to organize it, I think I will do like last time, with two judges, from each forum. But I need to define rules and a system of points. I will make an announce in one or two weeks. Now, everybody should be aware that in all times, the customs that were the most appreciate were the creations, the best idea, the building, the originality, and the Zoids feeling. So there is few space left for diorama and repaint, sorry. It is not that are not well done, or good things, it is only that near a Maethius custom, a repaint doesn't have a chance. So the Grand Prix will accept the top three of each forum. After, everybody choose his top three. Another thing, I will personnaly participate to the contests on the separate forums, but, as I am offering a prize for the Grand Prix, I won't qualify, and I will probably be judge with Jedi Bill for Zoidfans. Just to be clear. Lionel

High praise, indeed. I just love the creative customs that come about because of the Grand Prix... the Lionfish, Leviathan, Centaur, Harbinger, and so many others were nothing short of inspiring! Thanks to everyone making this work on so many forums, and good luck to all the participants that make it all worthwhile.
