Tilly made me do it.
She saw this Mint-in-Chewed-Box Deahty on E-Bay and prodded me into getting it. She gave me a score of insane reasons, all of which I used to justify the fact that I wanted an OJR Deahty really badly anyway. Why did I want it? Because, as an obsessive completist, I could say that I now had all four Deahty variants.
Seriously though, I wanted it for other reasons. I really like the Deathsaurer as a kit and for its use in the battle story (I tend to ignore the craptactular Anime Deathy and the OMGKEWLZNESS that surrounds it in the Fandom), which helped a lot. I’d also heard a lot of… umm… interesting things about its colours, which made me even more curious.
So I took the pluge. And I don’t regret it.
And let’s see why.
DOOM Good:
I’m going to start off here by assuming that everyone knows what a Deathsaurer is and what its like. If you don’t, you might want to do some research, then come back and get to the review. I’ll be covering the differences between this guy and the NJR version, rather then the ins and outs of the kit.
From a first glance, the OJR Deahty has the same basic setup as the NJR one – Black body, red trim, silver claws and guns, clear eyes. However, on a more thorough examination, the Zoid’s colours are actually quite radically different. Its this difference that makes the OJR Deahty appealing, as its got a rather unique colour scheme.
What’s black on the NJR version is instead a deep, chocolate brown colour. Not quite black, but too deep for brown… call it Blrack, if you want. Or maybe a flat bronze. No, I like Brlack, so we’ll stick with that. Yay. It’s quite an interesting colour, one that, near as I can tell, isn’t used on any other Zoid as the primary colour (Except possibly the OJR Black Rhimos. Anyone want to confirm/deny this?) and it adds a lot of character to the Zoid.
The second is a rather bright red, a lot lighter then the reds commonly used on other Zoids. For a comparison, I’d say it’s a hair lighter then the red on the NAR Energy Liger. It’s a colour that contrasts nicely with the Blrack without clashing.
The silver claws and weapons are a lighter silver colour then that use on the NJR version, certainly enough to be noticeable. The canopy covers are another big change - Rather then the slightly bluish ones of the NJR version, they’re a smoky brown colour and a lot lighter. They’re also noticeably lighter then those on Bloody Deathsaurer, for anyone keeping track. Finally, the caps are a light teal colour, a radical departure from other Deahty variants.
The basic colour scheme (Bright Red and Blrack with Teal caps) was used on the OJR Twinhorn and Storch. However, they used them with the Red as the main colour. With the Deahty, it’s the other way around, giving him a very unique and attractive appearance.
Oh, and as an interesting side note, between three different Deahtsaurers, the only parts that are the same colours between any of them are the black washers.
Finally, for those who are interested, the Deathsaurer comes with a very funky sticker sheet of old-style Zenebas logos, warning labels and other stuff, including a lot of ones with Zoidian numbers. They also, oddly have “EBZ-05” type numbers. Its weird, because Deahty is EPZ-06 and, to boot, there was no EBZ-05.
I only found a single moulding change between the OJR and NJR version, which is rather surprising given the amount that normally crop up. The only difference being, in this case, the deletion of a copyright stamp from inside the chest cockpit. A trivial one of no notice.
Finally, mine had the letters “J6” written on the inside of the chestpeice (part A2) in black ink. Odd.
DOOM Bad:
Nothing at all. Unless you don’t like Deathsaurers there’s nothing to dislike about this guy.
DOOM Ugly:
You may have noticed a running trend in my reviews… the only Ugly here is his price. OJR Deahty was apparently never that common to begin with, and today he’s even less so. Expect him to go for INSANE prices if MiB and only slightly more reasonable ones if built.
Oddly enough, though, he usually goes for less then Bloody Deathsaurer.
Conclusion:
There is yet to be a bad Deathsaurer Variant. There are only cool ones and cooler ones. As neat as NJR Deahty’s flat black and dull red is, this one is, to my mind, more attractive and more chrasamatic. I put him ahead of the NJR, but still behind Bloody in terms of overall coolness.
And I recommend him lots…. To those with lots of moneys.
