Introduction
Gojulas Mariner is #1 in the series of "Web Exclusive" Zoids. There are 14 in total, each one sporting fully painted box art by Yuji Kaida ( highly renowned Japanese artist, responsible for concept art & design in countless compter games as far back as 1994).
The Zoid itself is a blue/gold/grey recolour of the Gojulas MkII (A Gojulas with the CP-10 cannons).
I have included thumbnails to pictures I have taken of my Gojulas Mariner.
Overview
Sturm Tyrann's box is the same size as Sturm Tyrann's, a shade bigger than Iron Kong MkII's.
The artwork is superb. You can see every mechanical detail on the Zoid, right down to the pistons in the claws. Since Gojulas Mariner is supposed to be an amphibious assault Zoid, the artwork reflects this well with the swamp-like setting.
Opening the box reveals a lot of pieces:
Battery unit (with lighting block attached)
2 metal weights (head and tail)
1 pilot figure
Motor
9 sprues
1 transparent part (cockpit canopy)
15 bushes (for leg joints)
3 small wheels (on the same sprue as the bushes)
Large tail piece
2 instruction booklets
1 sticker sheet
Anyone who has built a Gojulas will know what a straightforward kit it is to put together; there are no surprises here. The model goes together cleanly and smoothly, although a couple of parts did need some minor cleaning up to get rid of flash (see below). Something I did notice is that not all the caps on the lower legs actually went on all the way; this wasn't a problem with my old Zoids 2 Zoidzilla.
The CP-10 cannons fit onto the Gojulas' battery pack, on 2 large posts on the battery covers. it's interesting to note that fitting the cannons means putting the battery covers on the opposite way up to how they were originally designed (so that the posts are at the top).
Gojulas Mariner is an imposing looking Zoid simply because of its design and sheer size. The colours are often criticised (as you can see, it's BLUE and GOLD. Hmmmm.), but they do fit an amphibious assault machine. The design is starting to show its age, though; a lot of the moulded details aren't as sharp as they could be (or used to be), Some pieces have some prominent mould joinlines on them, and some pieces on mine did have a fair amount of flash on them (nothing terrible, but noticable to me nonetheless).
The CP-10 cannons can be slung back or positioned over the shoulders. Each cannon has 2 joints, and so can be put into any number of positions.
The Good
- I love Gojulases. The design is big, bad and mean.
- The CP-10 cannons are HUGE.
- It's nowhere near as expensive as some of the other Web Exclusives (Sturm Tyyrann, for example). I got mine for around $70.
The Bad
- ... it's BLUE. If you don;t think you'll like the colours, don't buy it because you're probably right.
- the moulds for this Zoid are rather long in the tooth now; as a result, some of the finer moulded details suffer.
Conclusion
Gojulas Mariner is an impressive Zoid because of its size and bulk, and the huge cannons attached to it. The colours aren't for everyone, though, so think hard before buying it if you aren't trying to complete the Web Exclusives.
