Yes, primer is a special kind of paint, which says "primer" and they can come in bottles or in spray cans. Its real easy if you go to a hobby shop, if not, check the label and make sure its "PLASTIC PRIMER" or it says its good for plastic since there are other primers, like automotive primer that can come in spray cans and they can literally melt the plastic.
Now, at the hobby shop you can find primer or primer surfacer, darth spectre has already accurately explained what primer is, surfacer on the other hand is a bit thicker and can actually go into small scratches and even out the surface so when you do your final coat, its smooth.
If you dont own an airbrush, primer in the spray can.
Also, you dont need primer all the time, usually only when you are painting a dark surface with a light color. Since Abaddon usually makes nice dark zoids, he doesnt really need primer as much.
There, I hope I could help. As for me, I learned the hard way when I had to strip an entire custom because when I painted a purple surface with yellow paint, no matter what I did, the purple showed.
Darth on and happy hunting.

Thanks for the compliment, ped:) Yeah primer seem rather important when i comes to making the paint stay on the plastic surface. I prime canvases when I paint them Darth on Van!!!

Looks like a little therapod on steroids But really its an improvement over Madcat I suppose, I like how you built it, quite original. Since the others already pointed out the flaws its better that you invest your time, effort and money on tools that will bring out the potential of your craft. Its a big deal to have proper paint treatment since a zoid (or any model) of superior detail is wasted on mediocre paint and tools. You have your enthusiastm to fuel you, next step is get the right resources to bring out the best of your work. ZOID ON!
