Has anyone done any of this? I want to touch up my Saix a bit, and I have a Shadow Fox on the way and I'd like to do that as I build it.
If so what are any tips/tricks/guides you know of, and what kinds of paint/materials do you use. Airbrush, rattlecans, brush and jar etc.

Hi, Yankee! I only used spraypaint cans on my first ever customs/recolors, now I use airbrush exclusively for base colors... you just can't preserve the detail with cans. I don't tend to weather us much as a lot of painters do, but I think models look good with some. I have seen plenty of exceptional kits with bold, crisp colors (they often win contests) and I've seen others that look like they've been dragged through gravel pits for decades and left to lie in the rain... and they can win contests, too! It really depends on your personal style. I like Zoidy color schemes with a touch of realism, but I don't see myself as honestly very good at it. Some things that are a must, it seems, for the vast majority of styles: Pane lining - whether you use a bold pen or a subtle wash, popping the details almost can improve a kit even it this is all you do. Matte finish - again, I've seen many shiny kits, but even bold paint jobs tend to use a flat finish, then... Clear coat - after all the painting and decals, a good clear coat (again, matte) is a great way to tie it all together I tend to be a hydraulic painter these days; the brass-chrome look has become quite common, though. A little metallic paint in the right places can really add a sense of weight and detail to almost any kit. Hope that helps!

Helps a lot, I went out and got some new paints and kit today for modeling and it felt good to get back to it. I used to paint a lot of models and such, but haven't for some time.
Unfortunately I don't really have anywhere to airbrush, though I wish I did. So for now it's hand brush city for me. Going to try some Saix updates tomorrow, I'll make a thread as I go.

My old panel lining solution is just adding a few drops of thinner to a single drop of black (or dark color related to the color of the part), let the solution fill the lines by capillary action and quickly wipe off the surface so it doesn't streak. Of course, sometimes the streaks add to it, like a smokey effect from a vent or to look like water stains from running down the piece, but you have to do it right so it doesn't just look like an accident.

Yeah, that's about what I've come up with. Taking a few coats using blue lining on black panels...
However I got my Shadow Fox in the mail a week and a half ago, and with nothing to do on my days off here I went ahead and repainted it while I assembled it. It's finished now but I'm working on a custom secondary main weapon for it. Once that's done I'll get pictures up.
