But if I cross the line and become pro, with the current laws of copyrights and how they pertain to writers, I can never write fan-fiction again, unless under strict approval of the copyright holders. It's a shame, but it is the way things work for writers and our current laws. I don't think that's 100% correct. Although i can see how fanfiction by a professional author could be viewed as for-profit (by virtue of being an advertisement for the author's original IP), writing under a nom de plume would seem to fall well within fair use. Even if it were true, why would it change what you do now? If you've gone pro, you'll probably be far more compelled to write your original IP stuff, especially since new writers find it so hard to make money. (I'm still trying to get my novel published )

Yep. Still too risky for me.
Exactly, which is why I'm wanting to get my Blitz Team fanfic finished up for the fans of Zoids.
Just remember, Harry Potter went through 12 rejections before someone took a chance. As we wannabe pro writers say ... there are 12 editors kicking themselves in the butt on that one. In reality, one never knows what is going to be a big hit among readers.

Did you ever decide if/where to post it?

Yeah, I did. I didn't want too say much yet until I got used to the FFn interface. Ironically, FFn works wonderfully with my LibreOffice and my Linux Box. It burps occassionally, but only during the pre-publish chapter review area, and that is not too hard to work around and it doesn't apply to stuff that shows up for everyone to read. I think that FFn should be the central place for the story, and comments threads can be placed here and everywhere else for those that don't have FFn accounts. And comments would be much appreciated. As far as IP stuff, I hadn't considered the new electronic age of reading ... it may be an option for work that doesn't suit a publishing house, but may suit enough readers to make it worth the while.
